Key takeaway

Alexandrova's stronger serve supports her favorite status. Guo's hard-court return record supports Court Shark's more cautious 62% model probability for Alexandrova.

Ekaterina Alexandrova faces Hanyu Guo at Ningbo on Tuesday, October 20\. Court Shark's model gives Alexandrova a 62% chance, with Guo's return record supporting a closer contest than the market suggests.

## A clear favorite, but a disputed margin

The market makes [Ekaterina Alexandrova](https://courtshark.ai/players/ekaterina-alexandrova-10206420) a strong favorite at Ningbo. Court Shark's model leaves [Hanyu Guo](https://courtshark.ai/players/hanyu-guo-10215250) considerably more room to win. They agree on the pick. The disagreement concerns how much separation there is, with ranking and recent results favoring Alexandrova while the hard-court return figures offer a case for Guo.

Tuesday's match gives Guo an opportunity against an opponent ranked No. 24, while Alexandrova faces a player ranked No. 240 as she tries to end consecutive losses. Guo also lost her most recent match. Neither arrives with an uninterrupted run of wins, which makes the ranking gap a clearer argument for Alexandrova than any claim of dominant current form.

Alexandrova went 5-5 in her last 10 matches, while Guo won three of her last ten. That supports the market's stronger preference in direction, though it does not establish the appropriate margin. Prices show the market's assessment, not the reasons behind it.

## The serve favors Alexandrova, the return favors Guo

The hard-court service records support Alexandrova's favorite status. Over the past year, she held 70% of her service games, compared with Guo's 63%. That gives her a more reliable starting point, particularly if she can keep Guo from turning return games into regular opportunities to break.

Guo has a counterargument. She broke in 40% of her return games on hard courts over that window, while Alexandrova broke in 31%. Those figures suggest a match in which the stronger server does not necessarily control every service game, and they support taking Guo's chances seriously.

The samples covered 24 matches for Guo and 33 for Alexandrova. These are broader surface records, not results against each other, so the rates cannot establish how their serve and return will interact directly. My reading is that Alexandrova's service advantage supports the favorite, while Guo's return success supports the model's more restrained assessment of that advantage.

## A deciding set could favor Guo's case

A longer match could change the balance. Guo won 28 of 44 career deciding sets, a record that offers a concrete reason to resist treating an extended contest as automatically favorable to the higher-ranked player. It does not mean she will reach that stage. Her route there depends on making her return strength count without allowing her own service games to become the easier source of breaks.

Alexandrova won 65 of 140 career deciding sets. That history complicates a confident forecast if Guo takes a set, although career records do not isolate this particular matchup or current conditions. These players had never met, leaving no direct evidence that either player's broader strengths transfer cleanly against the other. The forecast could also prove too cautious if Alexandrova's stronger serving keeps Guo from establishing the return pressure that makes the underdog's case credible.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Alexandrova with a 62% win probability, compared with the market's 77%. The model's less emphatic preference is defensible: Alexandrova has the ranking and service advantages, but Guo's return record gives her a credible way to interrupt them. The favorite is clear. The size of her advantage is less convincing.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Alexandrova and agrees with the model's choice. The tennis case for that selection rests on her more dependable serve and better recent results, rather than an assumption that Guo cannot compete. The forecast's median total is 21 games.

The middle half of forecast outcomes runs from 17 to 27 games, allowing for either a relatively short match or a more extended contest. Alexandrova is the pick, but Guo's ability to break serve is the specific obstacle to a routine win.

AI analyst

Picks Ekaterina Alexandrova (agrees with the model)

Its case: Alexandrova has the clearer hard-court serve edge, winning 70.3% of first-serve points and holding 72.6% of the time versus Guo’s 60.3% and 61.2%, while her recent opposition has been much stronger.

The risk it names: Guo has home support and has taken a top-50 win within 5 days, so her stronger return profile and recent three-set match toughness are the main upset risk.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
