Key takeaway

Alina Charaeva brings the stronger recent hard-court record into Sao Paulo, while Xiaodi You arrives with current match rhythm. The Court Shark model gives Charaeva a 63% win probability.

## The number behind the Sao Paulo matchup

The ball will skid across the hard court in Sao Paulo. The opening exchanges should immediately test timing, because one player has been active while the other returns after a long break. [Xiaodi You](https://courtshark.ai/players/xiaodi-you-10214646) is ranked No. 223, while [Alina Charaeva](https://courtshark.ai/players/alina-charaeva-10221406) is No. 624\. That gap makes the matchup look simple at first glance. It is not simple. Charaeva's recent hard-court results point in the opposite direction, and her absence is the number that prevents those results from settling the argument on their own.

Their history offers little separation. The overall head-to-head stands at 1-1, and their record on hard courts is also 1-1\. Charaeva won the latest meeting in Midland after You extended the second set to a tiebreak. Familiar opponents can recognize patterns early. You has already shown she can stay in range against Charaeva, rather than allowing the match to become a routine exercise in protecting a lead. That prior contest also puts extra attention on small moments, such as a return game after a missed chance or a few uncertain points at the net.

## Recent results favor Charaeva

You's broader recent record gives her a difficult base line. She is 3-7 across her last ten matches, which leaves little room to dismiss the losses as an isolated dip. Hard courts have brought better results, where she is 6-4 over the same sample. That split matters. Sao Paulo gives You the surface that has produced her steadier work, even though the overall record says she has struggled to carry momentum from match to match. Her current run can still matter if she starts with clean depth and makes Charaeva defend early.

Charaeva is 6-4 over her last ten matches. Her hard-court mark is stronger at 8-2, providing the clearest reason she enters with the model's edge. The surface record is more persuasive than the ranking difference because it speaks directly to the conditions awaiting them in Sao Paulo. She has also lost her most recent match. That does not erase a stronger stretch on hard courts, but it does mean there is no uninterrupted run carrying her into this contest. The question is whether her established level returns immediately after time away from competition.

## Freshness meets a long layoff

You arrives with match rhythm. She is on a two-match winning run, and her last appearance came one day ago. That recent work should help at the start, where the pace of the court and the feel of the ball can decide whether a player swings freely. She has been on court often enough to know where her timing sits. A fast beginning would be valuable. It could force Charaeva to play from behind before she has found consistent length on her groundstrokes or confidence in her service games.

Charaeva faces a 31-day absence. She has had no matches in the last 14 days, leaving a real uncertainty around competitive sharpness despite her superior hard-court record. Time away does not automatically mean poor tennis. Still, it can appear in narrow moments, including the first pressure serve, a return choice at deuce, or a hesitant response after a missed opportunity. You's active schedule gives her a practical way to make those moments uncomfortable. Charaeva's Midland win shows she can solve this opponent, but she will need to settle quickly if You brings the same urgency that carried her through her recent matches.

## What the model says

The model gives Alina Charaeva a 63% chance to win and Xiaodi You a 37% chance. It favors Charaeva's stronger recent hard-court record, while leaving meaningful room for You's current activity and their even history. This is not a one-sided matchup. You has proof that she can keep the score close against Charaeva, and the returning player has a shorter margin for error during the opening phase. The first set may reveal whether Charaeva can impose the form reflected in her recent surface results.

Market consensus has Charaeva at 68%, a 5-point gap from the model's view. The market has moved toward Charaeva, but the model remains more cautious because the layoff sits beside an otherwise convincing hard-court sample. That is the number the crowd can miss. A composed opening from Charaeva, with firm serving and secure baseline depth, would weaken the concern around rust. The call would change if You's freshness turns into sustained pressure, or if Charaeva's early timing remains uneven long enough for the familiar matchup to become tight again.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
