Key takeaway

Aryna Sabalenka overcame Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-3 to move into another US Open quarterfinal. The defending champion recovered from a second-set deficit in a match shaped by returning pressure.

## Sabalenka finds a way through

On Sunday, [Aryna Sabalenka](https://courtshark.ai/players/aryna-sabalenka-10214544) defeated [Taylor Townsend](https://courtshark.ai/players/taylor-townsend-10203501) 6-4, 6-3 to return to the US Open quarterfinals. It was tense. Townsend kept changing the shape of rallies and made the defending champion work through frequent swings in control.

Sabalenka has completed an 8-2 run across her last ten finished matches. That form helped her settle after an uneven opening and deliver her sixth consecutive quarterfinal appearance in New York. She stayed composed late. The result keeps her title defense moving after a test that was far closer than the final score suggested.

## A difficult home-crowd test

Townsend had strong backing in the stadium and gave the crowd plenty to follow. There were 10 breaks of serve, while the American's returning repeatedly stopped Sabalenka from establishing a comfortable rhythm. She also moved forward effectively. That approach made Sabalenka defend from positions she would rather have avoided.

Ranked No. 132, Townsend arrived with a 7-3 record from her last ten completed matches. She forced Sabalenka to serve out the opening set after an earlier opportunity had gone, then built a 3-1 lead in the second. For a while, the match was open. Her performance showed why the higher-ranked player could not rely on a routine baseline exchange.

## Late surge decides the match

Sabalenka responded as soon as Townsend moved ahead in the second set. She broke back without losing a point, then began to hit her returns with more authority and control the direction of the exchanges. The change was immediate. Her victory extended her unbeaten US Open run to 18 matches.

In the closing games, Sabalenka gave up only five points and ended the contest in 75 minutes. Townsend could no longer apply the same sustained pressure once Sabalenka took command of the return games. The finish was sharp. It turned a complicated afternoon into a straight-set result, even though the match had offered little margin for error earlier.

## Williams mark and the larger target

[Serena Williams](https://courtshark.ai/players/serena-williams-10200033) was the previous woman to make this many consecutive US Open singles quarterfinals, doing so in 2016\. Sabalenka has now joined that part of the tournament's history. She has also reached at least the semifinals here every year since 2020\. These hard courts have consistently brought out her best major results.

Williams captured three straight US Open championships, a standard Sabalenka can still match with three more wins. Sabalenka won this event in 2024 and 2025\. Her current run gives her the chance to extend that sequence.

A fourth-round exit at Wimbledon left Sabalenka seeking to avoid her first season without a major trophy since 2022\. The Townsend match did not offer an easy route forward. It did show her ability to recover when the match turns against her.
