Key takeaway

Bencic's service advantage supports favoritism. Kawa's better recent hard-court record supports caution, but she needs more reliable holds to turn that evidence into an upset.

Belinda Bencic faces Katarzyna Kawa in Ningbo's round of 16\. Court Shark's model gives Bencic a 69% chance, with her serve supporting favoritism but recent form supporting a closer contest than the market expects.

## A quarterfinal place, with disagreement over the risk

An 18 percentage point gap separates Court Shark's model from the market on [Belinda Bencic](https://courtshark.ai/players/belinda-bencic-10202505) against [Katarzyna Kawa](https://courtshark.ai/players/katarzyna-kawa-10203514). Both favor Bencic. The disagreement concerns how much room Kawa has to win, rather than which player brings the stronger overall case to this hard-court match.

They meet Thursday, October 22, in Ningbo's round of 16, with a quarterfinal place available at the WTA tournament. Kawa has a chance to extend a three-match winning run against a substantially higher ranked opponent.

Kawa was ranked No. 128, while Bencic stood at No. 12\. That separation supports the favorite, making Kawa's recent results and her ability to protect serve the more useful grounds for considering an upset.

## Bencic's serve supports favoritism, form allows more doubt

Bencic's service record supplies the clearest evidence supporting her status as the favorite against an opponent whose recent hard-court results were stronger than hers. Over the last year on hard courts, she held 76% of service games, compared with Kawa's 56%. That is the main separation. It suggests Bencic has the better foundation for protecting a lead without repeatedly needing to recover breaks.

The return figures were much closer: Bencic broke in 38% of return games and Kawa in 36%. My reading is that Kawa's route depends more on keeping her own serve intact than on establishing an advantage in return games.

Recent results offer a counterweight to the service gap and support the model's more cautious assessment. Kawa went 6-4 across her latest hard-court matches; Bencic split hers evenly. That narrower view favors Kawa and gives her a stronger recent record on this surface despite the substantial difference in their rankings.

## Kawa needs her recent wins to translate into holds

Kawa's winning run offers encouragement, but two of those victories ended in opponent retirements. That limits the run's value as evidence of sustained superiority across complete matches, particularly against an opponent with Bencic's service record. The distinction matters. Kawa needs the results to translate into more reliable service games, rather than simply more chances to break back.

A deciding set would test a different part of the matchup. Bencic won 101 of 169 career deciding sets, a record that gives her a stronger basis for confidence if the match becomes extended rather than straightforward.

Kawa won 35 of 74 career deciding sets. They had never met before. Their first meeting therefore tests whether Kawa can turn her recent results into enough service holds to keep Bencic from controlling the score. A sustained improvement in Kawa's serving would be the concrete reason to reassess Bencic's advantage.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Bencic with a 69% win probability, while the market consensus gives her an 87% chance. The model is more cautious. The service gap supports their shared choice, but Kawa's better recent hard-court record makes the model's lower confidence easier to defend than the market's stronger preference.

Court Shark's AI analyst also picks Bencic, agreeing with the model. Her service advantage is the strongest statistical reason to support that choice. Court Shark's scoreline forecast gives her a 50% chance of winning in straight sets and puts the median total at 20 games.

The forecast's middle half runs from 17 to 26 games, leaving room for resistance without making a deciding set the central expectation. Kawa's ability to protect serve is the most useful early measure: repeated service losses would leave her needing to outperform Bencic in return games.

Picks Belinda Bencic (agrees with the model)

Its case: Bencic has the much sturdier hard-court baseline: 69 wins from her last 100 versus Kawa’s 24 from 78, with a 73.8% hold rate and 68.8% first-serve points won compared with 52.9% and 58.8%.

The risk it names: The main risk is that her recent Ningbo rhythm, despite 239 minutes in the last 7 days, carries into another tight match.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
