Key takeaway

Bergs was the narrow model favorite and won without a deciding set. Equal recent records kept the matchup close on paper, while his higher ranking and more recent match play favored him.

Zizou Bergs beat Toby Samuel in straight sets at the European Open, with a tiebreak keeping the finish close. Matching recent records supported a tight forecast, while Bergs brought the higher ranking and more recent match play.

## A straight-sets result with a tight finish

3-6 6-7(3) was [Toby Samuel](https://courtshark.ai/players/toby-samuel-210389)'s losing score against [Zizou Bergs](https://courtshark.ai/players/zizou-bergs-200267) in Brussels. The finish was close. Bergs took the opening set without a tiebreak, but needed one to settle the second and avoid a deciding set at the European Open.

Samuel's live win chance fell to 31% after he slipped behind in the opening set, then stood at 24% when that set ended. That was the meaningful early separation: Bergs had turned an almost even starting position into a clear advantage before the closer second set began.

The score supports a distinction between a competitive finish and an evenly balanced match throughout. Samuel stayed close enough to force a tiebreak, but never took a set. Without point or break-point totals, the score cannot establish whether serving strength or missed return opportunities produced that finish.

## Equal recent records, different preparation

Both players entered with a 6-4 record across their last 10 matches, and their recent hard-court records matched too. Form alone offered little separation. Those matching results help explain why this was a more competitive matchup on paper than the rankings might initially suggest.

Bergs was No. 39, while Samuel was No. 100\. That gave Bergs the stronger ranking, although Samuel's recent results offered a reason not to read the ranking gap as a complete description of the contest.

Their preparation differed more clearly. Samuel had gone 13 days without a match, compared with 6 for Bergs. My reading is that Bergs arrived with a more current competitive rhythm, while Samuel faced some rust risk rather than an obvious deficit in recent wins.

Bergs also brought the only previous head-to-head victory, earned on grass at Eastbourne after losing the opening set. That meeting offered a small additional reason to favor him, but a single grass match was limited evidence for this hard-court contest.

## The model picked Bergs, with little separation

Court Shark's pre-match model gave Bergs a 52% chance of winning. The market consensus had him at 67% as the match started. They agreed on the favorite, but the model described a near-even contest while the market gave Bergs a clearer advantage.

The pick won. That settles the direction of this forecast, not whether its probability was better calibrated than the market's estimate; either assessment requires more than a single result. A straight-sets win can occur in a close matchup, just as a tiebreak does not by itself validate a narrow probability.

The useful distinction is between identifying the winner and measuring his advantage before play. Bergs justified the favorite label, while the shared recent form and competitive final set give substance to the model's restrained assessment rather than suggesting an overwhelming mismatch.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
