Key takeaway

Bublik's service protection is the strongest separator. Marozsan's better recent hard-court results and comparable career tiebreak record make close sets his clearest route to an upset.

Alexander Bublik's serve is the clearest separator against Fabian Marozsan in the Almaty Open round of 16\. Court Shark's model gives Bublik a 71% chance of winning.

## Bublik's service record sets him apart

An 88% service hold rate on hard courts is the strongest reason to favor [Alexander Bublik](https://courtshark.ai/players/alexander-bublik-122330): his record over the past year exceeded [Fabian Marozsan](https://courtshark.ai/players/fabian-marozsan-206681)'s 80%. That is the clearest separation. It suggests Bublik is better equipped to protect his service games, leaving his opponent fewer openings to turn a competitive set into a winning one.

Thursday's Almaty Open round of 16 puts the No. 22 against the No. 63, with a quarterfinal place available on hard courts. Bublik brings the higher ranking, but Marozsan brings the better recent results on this surface. The broader service comparison also places Bublik well above the field median and Marozsan just below it. For this matchup, service reliability offers a more specific explanation for Bublik's advantage than ranking alone.

### Service games held: where they stand

Each dot is one of the ATP top 100 with enough matches in the last 52 weeks. Alexander Bublik is 10th of 94; Fabian Marozsan is 60th of 94.

## Recent results point toward Marozsan

Bublik went 4-6 in his last ten hard-court matches, while Marozsan went 6-4\. Recent form favors the underdog. That complicates the service comparison because protecting serve more often has not translated into a better recent run of match results for Bublik. The shorter sequence favors Marozsan, although it does not establish how either player will handle this particular opponent.

The return records also lean toward Marozsan, who broke in 19% of return games over the past year on hard courts against Bublik's 16%. His advantage there is smaller than Bublik's advantage on serve, making service protection the more convincing separator in my assessment. Still, Marozsan has a plausible way to keep sets competitive: hold consistently enough to make his slightly stronger return record matter. Neither player's recent return record suggests that repeated breaks should be taken for granted.

## A close set could narrow the difference

Tiebreaks offer Marozsan a concrete route around Bublik's service advantage. Bublik won 142 of his career 269 tiebreaks. Marozsan won 64 of his career 119, so the career records do not give Bublik an obvious advantage if both players keep holding through a set. That distinction matters here. A strong hold rate helps a player reach a tiebreak without conceding a break, but it does not itself settle the points that decide it.

There is also no previous meeting to test whether Bublik's usual service protection carries over against Marozsan's return. Their head-to-head was unplayed. Marozsan's latest result was a win over Timofey Skatov in Almaty, while Bublik's latest match ended in defeat against Alexander Zverev in Shanghai. Those results give Marozsan a recent win at this event, but they do not establish a direct matchup advantage.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Bublik with a 71% win probability, and the market consensus gives him the same chance. The market opened at 65% before moving toward him. The agreement is clear. It establishes a shared favorite, rather than a difference between the model's estimate and the current market assessment.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Bublik, agreeing with the model. His stronger service protection is the clearest tennis reason to support that choice despite Marozsan's better recent hard-court results. Court Shark's scoreline forecast gives Bublik a 48% chance of winning in straight sets, with a median total of 23 games.

The forecast's middle half runs from 20 to 31 games, leaving room for a substantially longer match than a routine straight-sets result. Marozsan's task is to make Bublik's return games matter: if service holds accumulate on both sides, their similar career tiebreak records become more relevant.

AI analyst

Picks Alexander Bublik (agrees with the model)

Its case: Alexander Bublik gets the matchup edge on Almaty’s fast indoor hard court at 848m: across 200 hard-court samples he has a 15.4% ace rate and wins 77.5% of first-serve points, versus Fabian Marozsan’s 6.7% and 71.3%, while Bublik is also returning second serves more effectively.

The risk it names: Marozsan arrives with the better recent hard-court run (6-4 in his latest 10 versus 4-6) and is already through a tight opening match, so his current rhythm is the main risk, but Bublik is rested for 8 days, playing at home, and has recently pushed Alexander Zverev to two tiebreaks.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
