Key takeaway

Chidekh's form deserves more attention than his ranking alone suggests. His return record gives him a credible upset route, but Cerundolo remains the stronger pick.

Clement Chidekh's recent form makes this BNP Paribas Fortis European Open quarterfinal closer than the rankings suggest, but it does not make him the favorite. Court Shark's model gives Francisco Cerundolo a 66% chance of winning.

## Chidekh's results challenge the ranking gap

[Clement Chidekh](https://courtshark.ai/players/clement-chidekh-206889) had the stronger recent results. [Francisco Cerundolo](https://courtshark.ai/players/francisco-cerundolo-202103) held the stronger ranking, No. 21 against No. 152, a substantial difference that the recent win totals alone cannot dismiss.

Friday's quarterfinal in Brussels offers Chidekh a chance to carry his successful run further into an ATP Tour draw, while Cerundolo faces an opponent already winning here. Chidekh went 9-1 in his recent matches; Cerundolo went 6-4\. Those records make form a reason to question the size of the favorite's advantage, rather than sufficient grounds to reverse it.

Chidekh's Brussels wins included Botic Van De Zandschulp and Jacob Fearnley, both beaten without dropping a set. His earlier victories came at Mouilleron le Captif, while Cerundolo's sequence included wins over Jakub Mensik and Roman Safiullin, alongside losses to Mensik and Daniil Medvedev. The schedules were different. A simple count of wins does not resolve that difference in opposition.

## The hard-court return figures support Chidekh

Chidekh's case extends beyond his latest results. Over the last 52 weeks on hard courts, he broke serve in 32% of return games, a record that gives a concrete basis for taking his challenge seriously. It suggests a route to winning that does not depend entirely on holding his own serve and waiting for tiebreaks.

Cerundolo broke in 23% of return games over the same period, matching the tour average provided for the surface. Chidekh also held serve more often, at 79%. The surface figures therefore support the recent form argument rather than contradict it, although they do not establish how either player will perform against this particular opponent.

The samples were not identical. Chidekh's record covered 63 matches, compared with 30 for Cerundolo. My reading is that Chidekh's return record makes the ranking gap an incomplete guide, without making the recent winning run decisive.

## Service pressure could change the forecast

The clearest route to an upset is for Chidekh's return success to carry into this match and keep Cerundolo from holding comfortably. Cerundolo held in 77% of his hard-court service games over the measured period. That leaves a specific test for the favorite: whether he can protect his serve against an opponent whose recent results and return record both support a credible challenge.

Close sets offer a different test. Chidekh won 23 of 52 career tiebreaks, while Cerundolo's career record was stronger in that situation. If service breaks become scarce, that history favors Cerundolo more than the recent match records do.

They had never met. There is therefore no direct evidence that Chidekh's return advantage transfers to Cerundolo's serve, or that Cerundolo can contain him as the ranking difference might suggest. Early return games should provide the most useful check on the upset case.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Cerundolo with a 66% win probability, compared with the market consensus of 59%. Both favor the higher-ranked player. My assessment is that Chidekh's form narrows the practical reading of the ranking gap, but does not provide enough evidence to make him the likelier winner.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Cerundolo and agrees with the model's selection. The case for that pick is his stronger standing and wins against opponents such as Mensik and Safiullin, despite Chidekh's better recent record. The model's median match length is 22 games, which is a midpoint rather than an exact total forecast.

The middle range runs from 18 to 28 games, with Cerundolo winning in straight sets the model's likeliest single result. Chidekh's ability to create service breaks is the specific obstacle to that outcome.

AI analyst

Picks Francisco Cerundolo (agrees with the model)

Its case: Cerundolo gets the nod because his recent hard-court results were earned against far tougher opposition, a median current rank of 48 with 52% of opponents in the top 50, while his serve wins 69.2% of first-serve points and the fast indoor court should reward his slightly bigger serve profile.

The risk it names: Chidekh is the clear danger after going 9-1 in his last 10 hard-court matches, including a 6-1 6-4 win over Van De Zandschulp, but he has played 343 minutes across 4 matches in the last 7 days versus Cerundolo's 104 minutes and 1 match.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
