Key takeaway

Gauff is favored at 70%, but Mertens' current form and hard-court serve numbers make this closer than the 77% market consensus suggests.

Coco Gauff is favored over Elise Mertens in Beijing, but the Court Shark model is less certain than the market consensus. The difference comes from Mertens' hard-court resilience and a return game that can keep this matchup competitive.

## A favorite, but not by as much

70%. That is the model probability for [Coco Gauff](https://courtshark.ai/players/coco-gauff-10221103), and it makes her a clear favorite without treating this as a routine Beijing win. Her recent record is stronger, and she owns the prior meetings. Still, a strong favorite can face a real test when the opponent has enough returning quality to extend points and expose a shaky service patch.

The market consensus places Gauff at 77%, creating a seven-point gap from the model's view. That is the disagreement. [Elise Mertens](https://courtshark.ai/players/elise-mertens-10210722) has a smaller margin for error, yet her recent Beijing wins show that she arrives with timing and confidence rather than simply a favorable draw. This is a hard-court match where Gauff should dictate more often, but Mertens has practical paths to make the match uncomfortable.

## The head-to-head points one way

Gauff leads the head-to-head 3-0\. It is a meaningful edge because the record includes a hard-court win, where she also leads 1-0\. Familiarity has not solved the matchup for Mertens, whose controlled patterns have repeatedly met Gauff's greater speed and ability to change the direction of a rally. That history supports Gauff as the deserved favorite.

Their latest meeting was a long comeback win for Gauff after Mertens took the opening set. That match matters. Mertens showed she could disrupt Gauff for extended stretches, particularly when she found depth early and prevented the American from taking control with her first strike. Gauff eventually created the more damaging positions, but the match was far from straightforward. A clean record can conceal close tennis, and this pairing has already produced evidence that Mertens can make Gauff work.

## Gauff's form sets the baseline

Gauff has gone 9-1 across her last ten matches, and the same record applies to her recent hard-court run. She has won two straight matches in Beijing. Her latest victory over Xinran Sun was completed in straight sets after a closer opening set, which suggests she found a way through early resistance rather than relying on a perfect start.

The recent sequence also includes a comeback against Mirra Andreeva and a tight loss to Elena Rybakina. Those matches provide context. Gauff has spent much of this stretch winning matches in different ways, whether she is controlling a scoreline or recovering after the momentum shifts. Mertens will need to avoid allowing that same pattern to develop, because Gauff has repeatedly found an extra gear once a match becomes physical and prolonged.

## Mertens has a viable route

Mertens arrives with a 7-3 record from her last ten matches. She has also won two in a row, including a demanding Beijing victory over Jelena Ostapenko. That result is relevant because Mertens handled a match that changed pace and required her to stay organized across a full contest. She is not entering this round short of match sharpness.

Her route starts on return. Mertens has held 73% of service games on hard courts in the sample, while Gauff has held 71%. The bigger separation appears on the other side of the ball, where Gauff has broken serve 41% of the time and Mertens 34%. Gauff's return advantage gives her more ways to recover from a loose service game, but Mertens' hold rate means she can still demand patience from the favorite.

## Why the market is higher on Gauff

The opening consensus had Gauff at 78%, before moving one point toward Mertens. That change was modest. The market still sees the ranking gap, Gauff's commanding head-to-head lead, and her excellent recent hard-court results as enough to make this a heavily tilted matchup. Those are sensible reasons to favor her.

The model stops at 70%, rather than following that stronger consensus. Mertens' current run helps explain why the margin is narrower. She has played three matches in the last fourteen days, while Gauff has played two, and both players last competed one day ago. Neither arrives cold. The practical issue is whether Mertens can turn enough Gauff service games into pressure moments before Gauff's superior return begins to decide the match.

| Latest consensus | 77% | 23% |
| Court Shark model | 70% | 30% |

## What the model says

The model gives Gauff a 70% chance and Mertens a 30% chance. The market consensus has Gauff at 77% and Mertens at 23%, so it expects a more one-sided outcome than the model does. Gauff remains the likely winner, yet Mertens' form and ability to protect her serve make the underdog's case more credible than that consensus gap suggests.

Beijing is a WTA event. A Gauff win would send a high-ranked contender into the next round with momentum, while a Mertens win would be a major disruption to that route. The key stretch should come when Mertens is serving under pressure, because Gauff's return record is the clearest on-court advantage available to either player. Short holds would help Mertens. Long return games should favor Gauff.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
