Key takeaway

Jodar has the stronger return record, but Davidovich Fokina's better service record and recent hard-court results give a concrete basis for treating the final as even.

50% is Court Shark's model probability for Rafael Jodar against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Shanghai final. Jodar's return strength supports his market favoritism, while Davidovich Fokina's recent hard-court form and stronger service record support an even assessment.

## Different routes to the Shanghai title match

No. 13 [Rafael Jodar](https://courtshark.ai/players/rafael-jodar-212588) meets [Alejandro Davidovich Fokina](https://courtshark.ai/players/alejandro-davidovich-fokina-200221), ranked No. 26, in Sunday's Rolex Shanghai Masters final. Jodar is playing his first Masters final after beating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. The ranking advantage is his. Yet Davidovich Fokina arrives with recent results that give a stronger argument for a competitive final than their positions alone would suggest.

The recent hard-court record favors Davidovich Fokina, at 9-1 compared with Jodar's 7-3\. Their overall recent records match those surface records, so narrowing the comparison to hard courts does not change who has the better immediate form. My reading is that Davidovich Fokina's results provide a substantial counterweight to Jodar's ranking advantage.

Their semifinal finishes differed. Davidovich Fokina recovered from losing the opening set against Alexander Zverev, while Jodar finished against Medvedev without needing a decider. Earlier in Shanghai, Davidovich Fokina also came back against Hubert Hurkacz, giving him another example of recovering after a difficult start.

## Jodar's return meets Davidovich Fokina's serve

The market consensus gives Jodar 56%, a modest advantage over Court Shark's even assessment. The price moved 2 percentage points toward Davidovich Fokina from the opening reading, narrowing the disagreement without removing it. The gap remains. That movement shows a change in expectations, but the prices do not explain why those expectations changed as the final approached.

There is a clear tennis argument for Jodar's side: he has broken serve in 25% of his hard-court return games, against Davidovich Fokina's 19%. I read that as a stronger record of turning return games into breaks. These figures describe their available hard-court matches with full statistics, rather than how either player has performed against this particular opponent.

On serve, Davidovich Fokina has held in 87% of those hard-court games, compared with Jodar's 82%. That creates the central tension in this matchup: the stronger returner faces the player with the better record of protecting serve. In my assessment, Davidovich Fokina's service edge supplies a concrete reason to resist making Jodar a clear favorite.

### Model and market on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

## Watch whether the return advantage survives this matchup

Jodar's return games are the clearest place to test the case for him. If he can regularly threaten Davidovich Fokina's serve, I would see that as support for his historical return advantage carrying into this final. The reverse matters too. Comfortable service games for Davidovich Fokina would support the argument that his serving can offset Jodar's stronger return record.

An opening set will not settle everything. Jodar lost the opening set against Thiago Agustin Tirante and Jiri Lehecka before winning, then repeated that recovery against Botic Van De Zandschulp and Casper Ruud. Those results show that his Shanghai run has included repeated recoveries, rather than uninterrupted control from the start of each match.

The finalists have no recorded previous meeting, leaving no direct comparison of how their contrasting strengths interact. I would look for whether either player can make the other's stronger department less effective, rather than treating an early lead as decisive. For Jodar, that means disrupting Davidovich Fokina's service games; for Davidovich Fokina, it means keeping Jodar from establishing an advantage on return.

Picks Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (disagrees with the model)

Its case: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina gets a narrow nod after going 9-1 across his last 10 hard-court matches, including this week’s comeback over Alexander Zverev, while Rafael Jodar is 7-3 over his last 10 on hard courts and has spent 538 minutes on court in the past 7 days versus 454.

The risk it names: The main risk is Jodar’s superior longer-run hard-court record (70-25) and more efficient hard-court hold rate (81.2% to 78.1%), reinforced by his straight-sets win over Daniil Medvedev.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
