## Equal form, less recent match load

Recent results offered the clearest reason to take Davidovich Fokina seriously, even though his ranking and their previous meetings left him looking like the outsider. Both arrived with an 8-2 record over their last 10 matches. Their recent hard-court records matched that mark, too. Form did not separate them.

The schedule offered another clue. Zverev had played 6 matches in the preceding fortnight, compared with Davidovich Fokina's 4\. Both had the same break since their previous match, so the distinction was accumulated match load rather than extra recovery time immediately before the semifinal. Zverev spoke afterward about fatigue. That makes the workload difference relevant, although match counts alone cannot establish how much fatigue affected his performance.

Their history pointed the other way. Zverev led 6-1 overall and 4-1 on hard courts before this meeting. My reading is that Davidovich Fokina's current form made him a credible challenger, while the lighter schedule supplied a possible advantage their past meetings could not capture.

## The upset was possible, not the forecast

Court Shark gave Davidovich Fokina a 29% pre-match chance of winning. The market consensus had him at 23% when the match started. Both favored Zverev. The model was less one-sided than the market, but it still selected the player who lost, rather than identifying Davidovich Fokina as the likely winner.

The pick missed. A single result cannot establish whether those probabilities were well calibrated, and an underdog winning does not by itself make the original estimate unreasonable. The useful distinction is between evidence that supported an upset chance and evidence that made an upset the leading expectation. Davidovich Fokina's recent record supplied the former; the forecast did not claim the latter.

### What the model expected, and what happened

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
