Key takeaway

Novak Djokovic's head-to-head edge and Daniil Medvedev's sharper recent form point in different directions in Beijing. The model gives Medvedev a narrow 51% chance, while the market consensus is more decisive.

## A semifinal with competing signals

Beijing's hard court has already seen Novak Djokovic absorb pressure and find a way through. [Novak Djokovic](https://courtshark.ai/players/novak-djokovic-104925) arrives in a China Open semifinal after a hard-fought quarterfinal, with no recovery day separating that match from Monday's meeting. The crowd has watched him make the late, clean decisions that have defined so many of his big matches. This is familiar territory.

Across the net, [Daniil Medvedev](https://courtshark.ai/players/daniil-medvedev-106421) brings the stronger recent record and the higher current ranking. Medvedev is No. 6 and Djokovic is No. 11, a contrast that aligns with the market's preference for the Russian. Yet this matchup has rarely followed a simple ranking script, because Djokovic has repeatedly found patterns that disrupt Medvedev's deep return position. The model's narrow call reflects a contest that is close, rather than a routine verdict on current form.

## The record Djokovic brings to Beijing

Djokovic leads their overall head-to-head 10-5\. That advantage becomes 9-4 on hard courts, which matters because Beijing offers the surface on which their rivalry has produced its clearest evidence. He has won the matchup by taking time away, changing direction early, and making Medvedev defend from uncomfortable court positions. Those are old lessons.

Their last meeting came at the US Open, where Djokovic won 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3\. A straight-sets score can hide the tension of that contest, especially with a second set that needed a tiebreak before Djokovic created daylight. Medvedev has changed since then, and a past final does not settle a new semifinal. Still, the history gives Djokovic a practical reason to believe that his ball-striking can penetrate Medvedev's preferred defensive geometry.

## Medvedev's form is hard to dismiss

Medvedev has won 9 of his last 10 matches. He has also gone 9-1 in his last 10 hard-court matches, a run that gives the market plenty of reason to make him the stronger favorite. His seven-match winning run is the cleanest current form line either player carries into this semifinal. The results are emphatic.

Djokovic has won 7 of his last 10, and his hard-court record over that span is 6-4\. Those figures are solid, but they do not match Medvedev's recent volume or consistency, particularly with Medvedev playing more often over the last two weeks. Djokovic has played 3 matches in that period, while Medvedev has played 7\. Freshness is not an issue for either man, but the contrast helps explain why public expectations lean more firmly toward Medvedev than the model does.

## Why the market sees more separation

The market consensus has Medvedev at 56% and Djokovic at 44%. It has moved toward Djokovic from an opening mark of 41%, so there has been recognition that this is a less one-sided matchup than it first appeared. Even after that shift, the consensus still sees a clearer Medvedev edge than the model sees. That difference is the story.

Medvedev's higher ranking and recent hard-court surge are easy signals to trust before a match of this size. Djokovic's recent China Open win, meanwhile, renewed attention on his ability to manage difficult moments rather than offering a simple form line. He is 39, while Medvedev is 30, but age alone says little about how this particular court and opponent will play. Their shared history makes the gap narrower than the market's current split suggests.

## What the model says

The model gives Medvedev a 51% chance and Djokovic a 49% chance. The market consensus has Medvedev at 56% and Djokovic at 44%, leaving a 5-point gap between the model and market on Medvedev. The model's disagreement is modest, but meaningful in a match where Djokovic owns a long hard-court record against this opponent. There is very little separation.

Medvedev's recent 9-1 hard-court stretch supports his slight model edge, while Djokovic's 9-4 surface head-to-head lead explains why the call stays close. A dominant Medvedev serving display or an early Djokovic physical dip would change the call toward a clearer Medvedev advantage. Conversely, Djokovic taking control of the return games and shortening Medvedev's time behind the baseline would make his historical edge feel more relevant. Monday's semifinal should turn on which version of the matchup appears first.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
