Key takeaway

The level head-to-head supports a close matchup, not a preferred winner. Fernandez's recent Wuhan victory gives her a modest additional case, but equal hard-court serve and return rates leave Alexandrova a credible pick.

Leylah Fernandez faces Ekaterina Alexandrova in the Ningbo quarterfinal with their head-to-head level. That history deserves modest weight rather than a deciding vote: Court Shark's model gives Fernandez a 51% chance.

## Wuhan matters more than the oldest meetings

On October 12, [Leylah Fernandez](https://courtshark.ai/players/leylah-fernandez-10220367) beat [Ekaterina Alexandrova](https://courtshark.ai/players/ekaterina-alexandrova-10206420) in Wuhan, their most relevant earlier result because it came recently on the same surface as Ningbo. Fernandez needed a deciding set. That gives her a current reference point, but not evidence of a comfortable advantage.

Friday's quarterfinal offers a semifinal place to players who have both won their last two matches, with neither arriving after an extended absence. Fernandez has the latest win in this matchup; Alexandrova has an opportunity to reverse it within the same month. The short interval makes Wuhan more useful than their earliest meetings.

Their overall record stood at 2-2, entirely on hard courts. Alexandrova won in Adelaide in 2025, while their earlier Adelaide and Cincinnati meetings were split. Those older results establish that both have won this matchup, but a small series spread across several seasons cannot establish a lasting tactical advantage.

### Head-to-head by surface

Leylah Fernandez and Ekaterina Alexandrova have met 4 times. The record is level at 2-2.

## The recent meetings point toward another close match

The Adelaide match last season ended 6-4 3-6 6-2 in Alexandrova's favor. Wuhan ended 6-4 3-6 6-3 for Fernandez. Both required a deciding set, so the newest evidence supports competitive balance more clearly than it supports either player controlling the matchup.

Recency favors Fernandez's case. She had won eight of her last 10 matches, with the same record over her latest hard-court matches. That provides support beyond the latest meeting, although the two records overlap and should not be treated as separate demonstrations of form.

Alexandrova had won seven of her last 10, also matching her recent record on hard courts, which leaves little basis for calling her current form weak. The interpretation is a narrow one: Fernandez's latest win deserves extra attention because it is recent, not because it erased Alexandrova's previous success.

## Equal serving records leave room for a reversal

The surface numbers offer no clear separator. Over the past year on hard courts, both players held 71% of service games and broke in 32% of return games. If either improves on that return record here, the balance could shift without requiring a broad change in her level.

A deciding set would introduce another distinction. Fernandez had won 40 of 79 career deciding sets. Her Wuhan result fits that experience, but the career record does not suggest that reaching a third set makes her a strong favorite.

Alexandrova had won 65 of 140 career deciders, leaving her with substantial experience of that situation even though she had lost more than she won. Fernandez also played five matches in the last fortnight against Alexandrova's four. That modest workload difference could matter if the match becomes prolonged, though the match count alone cannot establish a fatigue disadvantage.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model narrowly favors Fernandez, giving her a 51% chance against Alexandrova's 49%. The market points the other way. Its consensus gives Alexandrova a 55% chance, compared with 45% for Fernandez, so there is disagreement over the favorite rather than a shared forecast of a clear advantage.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, picks Alexandrova and disagrees with the model. That selection is consistent with her previous hard-court wins over Fernandez and their equal recent serve and return rates, rather than treating Wuhan as decisive. The head-to-head should count as evidence that either can win, with the latest meeting giving Fernandez only a modest additional reason for preference.

The model's match-length forecast has a median of 21 total games. The middle half of outcomes runs from 18 to 27 games, leaving room for either a compact finish or a longer contest. Their latest meetings were settled in deciding sets, with a different winner each time.

AI analyst

Picks Ekaterina Alexandrova (disagrees with the model)

Its case: Alexandrova has the cleaner power baseline on hard courts, winning 70.2% of first-serve points with a 7.3% ace rate versus Fernandez’s 67.1% and 3.5%, and she has spent only 130 minutes on court in the last 7 days compared with 332.

The risk it names: The risk is substantial: Fernandez is 8-2 in her most recent 10 hard-court matches and beat Alexandrova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in Wuhan on October 12, so this remains a close matchup.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
