Key takeaway

Fernandez's stronger hard-court service and return records support the favorite's case. Kenin's clearest opening is to exploit Fernandez's heavy workload and keep sets close.

Leylah Fernandez's advantage on serve and return makes her the pick against Sofia Kenin in Hong Kong on Tuesday. Court Shark's model gives Fernandez a 70% chance, though her recent workload leaves Kenin an opening.

## Fernandez has the edge in both halves of the game

A 71% hold rate in the hard-court record puts [Leylah Fernandez](https://courtshark.ai/players/leylah-fernandez-10220367) ahead of [Sofia Kenin](https://courtshark.ai/players/sofia-kenin-10213550), who held 62% of her service games. That gives Fernandez the stronger starting position before their return records enter the comparison. The advantage runs both ways.

Their meeting in Hong Kong on Tuesday brings together players whose recent results point in opposite directions, with Fernandez trying to extend a productive stretch and Kenin trying to reverse hers. Fernandez also broke in 34% of return games, compared with Kenin's 23%. That combination makes her the better choice to advance in the draw, rather than a favorite dependent entirely on protecting serve.

Those figures covered the last 52 weeks, with Fernandez's sample spanning 36 matches. Kenin's sample was smaller, so the comparison is not equally established on both sides. Still, the agreement between the service and return measures makes the case stronger than either measure alone.

### Return games won: where they stand

Each dot is one of the WTA top 100 with enough matches in the last 52 weeks. Leylah Fernandez is 45th of 65; Sofia Kenin ranks ahead of 0 of 65.

## Recent results support the surface advantage

Fernandez won eight of her last 10 matches on hard courts, while Kenin won two of her last 10 on the surface. Those results support the serve-and-return comparison rather than contradicting it, although match results alone cannot establish which part of either player's game produced them. The recent evidence points one way.

The return advantage needs context. Fernandez's break rate remained below the tour's hard-court average of 37%, so her superiority here is relative to Kenin rather than evidence of an exceptional return game. Her stronger service record may therefore be the more dependable basis for the pick, especially if Kenin can keep more return games competitive.

Their direct history complicates that reading only slightly. Kenin won their lone meeting at the US Open in 2020, but one result from that long ago offers little basis for rejecting the more recent surface comparison. It establishes that Kenin has beaten Fernandez, not that the same matchup advantage persists.

## Workload and close sets offer Kenin a route

Fernandez played nine matches in the last 14 days, a demanding stretch before another tournament appearance. Kenin played only three matches over the same period. That difference creates a concrete route for an upset if Fernandez cannot sustain the service level that separates their hard-court records. Fatigue is a possibility, not a finding.

A close set offers another opening. Kenin won 53 of her 96 career tiebreaks, giving her a winning record in that situation. If she holds often enough to prevent Fernandez's return advantage from deciding a set earlier, that history becomes relevant without making a tiebreak outcome predictable.

Fernandez won 32 of her 72 career tiebreaks, a less reassuring record if the match comes down to isolated points at the end of sets. These career figures do not describe current form, but they identify a specific vulnerability in an otherwise favorable matchup. Kenin's task is to make the sets close enough for that distinction to matter.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Fernandez with a 70% win probability, while the market consensus gives her a 62% chance. Both favor the same player. The service and return records justify that direction, but they do not decide the match before it begins or remove the workload concern.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Fernandez. That agreement fits the tennis case: Fernandez has been more reliable in holding serve and more successful in breaking it on this surface. The model's match-length forecast has a median of 21 total games, consistent with a relatively compact match rather than a prediction of an exact total.

A Fernandez win in straight sets is the likeliest single result, with the middle half of match-length outcomes running from 18 to 27 games. The clearest early test is Kenin's service games: holding them consistently would deny Fernandez the part of the matchup where Kenin's recent record has been weakest.

Picks Leylah Fernandez (agrees with the model)

Its case: Fernandez has the much stronger hard-court run, winning 8 of her last 10 on the surface versus Kenin’s 2 of 10, and her rolling hard-court record is 61-39 compared with 40-60.

The risk it names: She also holds more often on hard courts (72.1% to 70.2%) and arrives on a 3-match overall winning streak, though the main risk is accumulated workload, 997 minutes across 9 matches in the last 14 days, while Kenin has had 6 days to recover and won their only prior meeting, 6-4 6-3.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
