Key takeaway

Dart's recent results justify a narrow preference over Gibson's ranking advantage. Gibson's stronger service record is the clearest reason that form could prove misleading.

Harriet Dart's recent form makes a stronger case than the ranking gap for Osaka's round of 32, but only narrowly: Court Shark's model gives her a 52% chance.

## An early test of ranking against form

[Talia Gibson](https://courtshark.ai/players/talia-gibson-10221883) has the ranking advantage that normally identifies the favorite. [Harriet Dart](https://courtshark.ai/players/harriet-dart-10211279) has the recent results that challenge that reading.

Their meeting in the round of 32 in Osaka on Monday puts those competing signals directly against each other on hard courts at a WTA event. For Gibson, it offers a chance to end a three-match losing run and advance in the draw. Dart arrives after consecutive wins at this tournament, with an opportunity to carry that success into the next round.

The distinction matters here. Recent results favor Dart, but Gibson's stronger service record gives her a concrete answer beyond her ranking. The case for treating form as the better guide is persuasive enough for a narrow pick, rather than a clear expectation of control.

## Dart's results outweigh the ranking signal

Gibson was ranked No. 41, while Dart was No. 116\. That gap points toward Gibson, but their latest results offered a substantially different comparison, including the matches each played on the surface used in Osaka.

Dart went 8-2 across her last 10 matches. Gibson won four of her corresponding stretch, and their recent hard-court records matched those overall returns. Dart's advantage was clear. Her latest wins came against Rina Saigo and Aoi Ito in Osaka, following victories over Ye Xin Ma and Yihan Qu in Beijing.

Gibson's record was uneven rather than uniformly poor: she beat Maria Sakkari during a sequence of wins in Singapore before losing to Leylah Fernandez, Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Sara Sorribes Tormo. Those results explain why recent form tilts the assessment toward Dart. The opponents differed, so the win totals alone cannot settle how large that advantage should be.

## Gibson's serve can reverse the form argument

Service games offer Gibson's clearest response. Over the last 52 weeks on hard courts, she held 75% of the time. If that advantage carries into Osaka, it could prevent Dart from translating her better recent results into sustained pressure on the scoreboard.

Dart held 66% of her service games in that window, but broke opponents in 46% of return games. Her return record offers a plausible route through Gibson's stronger serve, while her own service record leaves room for the ranking favorite to recover ground. That contrast makes the opening service games especially informative.

The schedule adds another test. Dart played on successive days before this meeting, with her latest win over Ito requiring a deciding set. Gibson had eight days since her last match. If Dart's consecutive matches affect her service performance, Gibson could find more opportunities to attack the weaker part of her opponent's hard-court record.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Dart with a 52% win probability, against Gibson's 48%. The market takes the opposite side.

Its current consensus gives Gibson a 54% chance, compared with 61% at the opening, so the price moved toward Dart without making her the favorite.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, picks Gibson and disagrees with the model. Gibson's stronger service record provides a tennis-based case for that dissent; Dart's recent results remain the stronger reason to lean the other way. Court Shark's match-length forecast has a median of 21 total games.

The middle half of forecast outcomes runs from 18 to 27 games, consistent with a competitive match rather than a decisive form advantage. Dart's ability to break serve must compensate for the more vulnerable service record she brings into this meeting.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
