Key takeaway

Swiatek is the clear favorite, but the model gives Mertens a 31% chance, well above the market consensus at 21%.

Iga Swiatek is favored in Beijing, but Elise Mertens has a larger chance in the Court Shark model than the market consensus allows. The gap is the number the crowd misses.

## The crowd is too certain

[Iga Swiatek](https://courtshark.ai/players/iga-swiatek-10216347) should win this match, but the crowd is treating [Elise Mertens](https://courtshark.ai/players/elise-mertens-10210722) as a far more distant threat than Court Shark does. The model gives Swiatek a 69% chance and Mertens a 31% chance. That remains a clear edge for Swiatek. It also leaves real room for Mertens to push the favorite in the first qualifying round.

That difference is the point. The market consensus puts Mertens at 21% and Swiatek at 79%. Both readings identify the same favorite, yet they disagree sharply on how often the match can become difficult. Mertens has already played her way into Beijing, while Swiatek has shown the stronger overall level on hard courts. A favorite can deserve that status and still face a tougher assignment than the public expectation suggests.

## Mertens arrives with real momentum

Mertens brings useful momentum into Friday. She has gone 7-3 across her last ten matches, and that same record applies to her recent hard-court matches. She has won her last three. That run gives her a recent base of wins on the surface she will see in Beijing.

Her route has not been effortless, which may help. Mertens had to handle deciding sets against Katie Volynets and Jelena Ostapenko before beating Cori Gauff 6-3 6-3\. The Gauff result showed a clean finish after two more demanding matches. She last played one day ago and has played four matches in the last fourteen days, so her match rhythm is current.

There is a limit to what that form proves. Recent wins do not erase the larger hard-court separation between these players, and Mertens has not beaten Swiatek in their previous meeting. Still, a player who has recently closed tight sets and then produced a straight-set win has earned more respect than a low public chance implies. Beijing has already required Mertens to solve different kinds of scorelines.

## Swiatek has the stronger hard-court case

Swiatek's case begins with a better recent record. She is 8-2 over her last ten matches, with the same return on hard courts. Her current winning run also reaches three matches. The baseline standard is higher, and that gives her the clearer route to controlling exchanges.

Across the broader hard-court sample, Swiatek has won 73% of her matches and Mertens has won 56%. That is a meaningful separation over a fuller stretch than the current event. Mertens has enough experience on this surface to make the contest awkward. Swiatek has delivered the stronger results more consistently.

On return, the contrast grows. Swiatek has broken serve in 42% of the relevant hard-court sample, compared with 34% for Mertens. That gives Swiatek more chances to take charge even if neither player starts poorly. Mertens can keep the score close by serving well, but Swiatek's return pressure remains the central tennis reason for her advantage.

## One meeting offers a narrow clue

Their head-to-head offers only a small clue. Swiatek leads 1-0 overall, and she holds the same 1-0 edge on hard courts. Mertens has no past win in this matchup to draw on. The single result therefore favors Swiatek without settling what will happen in Beijing.

Miami produced a tight opening set before Swiatek pulled away. Mertens made the favorite work early, which fits the model's view that she has a meaningful chance rather than no chance at all. Once the match settled, Swiatek found much clearer separation. That pattern is consistent with the broader hard-court record.

One prior contest cannot define a matchup. Mertens arrives in Beijing after a better immediate run, and her recent matches have tested her in close moments. Swiatek still owns the stronger surface record and the better return figures. The earlier meeting is useful as context, but it should carry less weight than the players' current level and current event form.

## What the model says

The Court Shark model gives Swiatek a 69% chance to win and Mertens a 31% chance. Swiatek is the deserved favorite. Her hard-court record and return advantage make the stronger case. Mertens's recent Beijing work keeps the margin from looking routine.

The market consensus has Swiatek at 79% and Mertens at 21%. That is more certain about the favorite than the model is. The difference centers on Mertens, whose current run has included both close wins and a direct victory. The crowd misses the size of her remaining path to an upset.

At opening, the market consensus put Mertens at 22%, before shifting toward Swiatek. The call would change if Mertens repeatedly protected her serve and prevented Swiatek from building sustained return pressure. That is a demanding task against this opponent. It is also the clearest route for Mertens to outperform the public expectation.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
