Key takeaway

Zverev can challenge for the top ranking in Vienna because Sinner faces the larger points deduction and cannot compete. Alcaraz has a separate opportunity to close the gap with little to defend.

Jannik Sinner's injury absence leaves his top ranking exposed as points from last year's titles come off his total. Alexander Zverev has a chance to take over, while Carlos Alcaraz has much less to defend.

## Sinner cannot defend his position on court

[Jannik Sinner](https://courtshark.ai/players/jannik-sinner-206173) faces a threat to his top ranking after a knee injury forced him to end his season early, leaving him unable to defend his titles. His current total is 10,950 points. After the Vienna deductions, that will fall to 9,450.

The exposure comes from last year's success. Sinner collected 500 points for winning Vienna and another 1,000 for his Paris Masters title, with both results now due to leave his ranking total. He won't be playing this week.

His recent results were strong. Court Shark records a 9-1 mark across his last ten completed matches. That record describes his recent form, but it cannot resolve the immediate problem: his season is over while his closest challengers can still add points.

## Zverev has an opening at the top

[Alexander Zverev](https://courtshark.ai/players/alexander-zverev-100644) trails Sinner by 880 points in the official standings, but he also has deductions of his own to absorb before any new results count. His total will lose 730 points. That makes Vienna an opportunity, rather than an automatic change at the top.

Last year's runner-up finish in Austria accounts for 330 of those points, while his Paris semifinal contributes another 400 to the amount coming off. Both results set a substantial standard to replace. Sinner's larger loss nevertheless gives Zverev room to close the gap.

The chance is immediate. Zverev could become the leading player when the rankings update on November 2\. His position depends on what he earns in Vienna, so the approaching deductions alone do not settle who will lead.

## Alcaraz has less ground to defend

[Carlos Alcaraz](https://courtshark.ai/players/carlos-alcaraz-207989) sits at No. 3 with 5,610 points, leaving him behind the leading pair but facing a much lighter deduction than either of them. His position is different. This week offers a chance to reduce the distance rather than protect a large result from last season.

Only 10 points are due to leave Alcaraz's total. He skipped Vienna and Basel last year, then exited Paris in the second round, which explains why this part of the calendar carries little defensive pressure.

Court Shark lists his recent record at 8-2\. That gives his campaign a strong recent backdrop, though the ranking opportunity comes specifically from having fewer points to replace. A deep Vienna run would add to his total while the players above him absorb larger deductions.

## The calendar makes this week unusual

The rankings use a rolling 52-week system, with older results removed and new points added as players progress through tournaments. Timing matters here. The calendar shift means last year's Paris results join the Vienna and Basel deductions, making the week's ranking changes broader than the current tournament schedule alone suggests.

Attention now turns to the Erste Bank Open, where Zverev faces Martin Landaluce and Alcaraz meets Karen Khachanov in the round of 32 on Monday, October 26\. Those opening assignments begin their efforts to add points in Vienna. Sinner has no corresponding chance to answer on court.

Court Shark win probabilities are statistical estimates, not advice. No outcome is guaranteed.
