Key takeaway

Jodar won a match the model rated even. His better recent hard-court record offered an edge, but Ruud's stronger service record gave a clear reason to expect a close contest.

Rafael Jodar beat Casper Ruud in three sets after Court Shark rated the match even. Their recent form matched, but Jodar had the better hard-court record while Ruud held serve more often.

## Jodar needed a deciding set

Jodar had to come from behind. [Rafael Jodar](https://courtshark.ai/players/rafael-jodar-212588) beat [Casper Ruud](https://courtshark.ai/players/casper-ruud-134770) in the Shanghai quarterfinal, recovering from an opening-set loss to win the remaining sets and advance.

The final score was 4-6 6-4 6-3\. Jodar finished with his widest winning margin of the match in the decider. Neither player needed a tiebreak, though that alone does not establish who controlled the rallies or served better on the day.

Live estimates capture an important shift during the deciding set. Jodar's chance rose from 57% to 83% as he moved ahead midway through it. His lead then grew further before he completed the comeback, turning a match that had initially gone Ruud's way into a place in the semifinals.

## Hard-court results favored Jodar, serving favored Ruud

Recent form barely separated them. Both arrived with a 7-3 record across their last 10 matches, and each had won three straight before this quarterfinal. Their schedules also matched: both had played three times over the previous fortnight and had the same rest since their last appearance.

The surface comparison gave Jodar a modest edge, with a 6-4 record in his recent hard-court matches against Ruud's 5-5 over the equivalent stretch. My reading is that this was a more useful distinction than their identical overall form. It favored Jodar without suggesting a large gap.

Ruud had a clear serving advantage in the broader field comparison: he held 86.4% of service games, compared with Jodar's 79.2%. Those figures describe their records coming in, not their serving in this match. Together, the contrasting records explain why there was a case for either player: Jodar had the stronger recent surface results, while Ruud had protected serve more consistently.

## The forecast left no clear favorite

Court Shark gave Jodar a 50% chance before the match. The market consensus had him at 55% at the start, unchanged from its opening reading. The distinction was small but meaningful: the model called an even contest, while the market made the eventual winner a slight favorite.

Jodar's win fits that assessment. A comeback requiring a deciding set is consistent with a competitive matchup, although the score is not a test of the probability itself. One result cannot establish whether the model or the market was better calibrated, and Jodar's win does not turn an even forecast into a confident pick after the fact.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
