Key takeaway

Li's stronger hold rate supports the favorite's status. Jones's superior return record is the clearest reason to prefer Court Shark's more cautious assessment over the market's.

Ann Li faces Emerson Jones in Osaka's round of 32, with Court Shark's model giving Li a 62% chance. Her serve and recent results support favoritism, but Jones's return record supports a closer match than the market expects.

## Agreement on Li, disagreement on the margin

The market is 10 percentage points higher than Court Shark's model on [Ann Li](https://courtshark.ai/players/ann-li-10215983) against [Emerson Jones](https://courtshark.ai/players/emerson-jones-10263644). Both favor Li. The question is how firmly: Li's stronger ranking and recent wins support the market's more confident assessment, while Jones's return record gives substance to the model's caution. Prices establish the difference in expectations, not its cause.

Tuesday's round of 32 in Osaka brings Li back after a Wuhan run that included a win over Aryna Sabalenka and ended against Iga Swiatek. Jones arrived with consecutive Osaka wins over Heather Watson and Taylah Preston, although Preston retired. Li was ranked No. 31, compared with Jones at No. 134\. That ranking gap supports Li's status as favorite, but Jones has already won matches at this event, giving this meeting a different immediate context for each player.

## Li's serve meets Jones's stronger return record

Li held 73% of her service games on hard courts over the past year, while Jones held 67%. That is Li's clearest statistical advantage in this matchup, because it suggests a more reliable route through her own service games without needing frequent breaks. The return comparison runs the other way. Jones broke in 39% of return games, compared with Li's 31%, which gives the underdog a concrete way to challenge that serving advantage.

Those records covered 38 matches for Li and 51 for Jones. They describe each player's results against different opponents, rather than measuring what either will do directly against the other. Recent form also favored Li, but only modestly: she won seven of her last 10 matches, while Jones won six. The same counts applied to their latest hard-court matches, so recent surface form does not offer a separate reason to widen the gap.

## Jones needs to make Li's service games difficult

Jones's route to an upset starts with translating her return record into pressure on Li's serve; if she cannot, her weaker holding record leaves less room for error. They had never met. There is therefore no direct history showing whether Jones's return advantage survives this particular matchup, or whether Li can consistently protect her service games against it. That uncertainty cuts both ways, rather than supplying an automatic argument for the underdog.

A deciding set would not erase Jones's chances. She won 22 of 37 career deciding sets, evidence that a longer match need not favor the higher-ranked player simply because of her ranking. Scheduling adds another possible complication for Li: she played six matches in the last 14 days. That workload could matter if the match becomes extended, though her recent results alone do not establish fatigue.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Li with a 62% win probability, while the market gives her 72%. Li is the pick. Her stronger service record and recent win over Sabalenka support that choice, but Jones's return results make the model's more restrained assessment persuasive rather than an argument against Li altogether.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Li and agrees with the model. The tennis case for agreement rests on Li's ability to hold serve more consistently, with her recent results providing additional support. The forecast's median total is 21 games, and Li winning in straight sets is the likeliest single result.

The middle half of projected outcomes runs from 18 to 27 games, leaving room for either a relatively short match or a more extended contest. The key distinction is on return: Jones has the stronger record there, but she must reproduce it against the player with the better hold rate.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
