Key takeaway

Medvedev's return advantage is the strongest reason to favor him. Atmane's route to an upset is to protect serve and force sets into tiebreaks, where their career records are more competitive.

Daniil Medvedev faces Terence Atmane in an Almaty Open quarterfinal, with his stronger hard-court return record providing the clearest advantage. Court Shark's model gives Medvedev a 76% chance to win, though Atmane's serve offers a route to a closer match.

## Medvedev's bigger advantage comes on return

[Daniil Medvedev](https://courtshark.ai/players/daniil-medvedev-106421) meets [Terence Atmane](https://courtshark.ai/players/terence-atmane-209279) in an Almaty Open quarterfinal for a place in the semifinals. Medvedev's hard-court record supports a clear favorite, but the difference between them is much greater on return than it is on serve. Both protected serve well.

As the draw narrows, Atmane faces a returner whose record suggests that holding serve will be harder than his own results might imply. Over the past year, Medvedev held 86% of his service games on hard courts, compared with Atmane's 83%. The relatively small service gap makes their return records the more useful distinction in assessing this quarterfinal.

Medvedev broke in 29% of his return games, while Atmane managed 15%. My reading is that Medvedev has more room to recover from a dropped service game, while Atmane faces greater pressure to preserve each hold. Those records covered 49 matches for Medvedev and 33 for Atmane. The samples extend well beyond their opening results here.

## Recent hard-court results support the serve numbers

Medvedev went 8-2 in his last ten hard-court matches, while Atmane went 5-5\. The gap extends to completed matches. That strengthens the case for Medvedev as the player more consistently turning his advantages into wins, rather than merely posting better service and return figures.

Their meetings offer narrower support. Medvedev led the head-to-head 2-0, with a win at the Australian Open in a match that ended in retirement. That incomplete result offers limited evidence of how a full match on this surface might unfold. Their other meeting took place on grass.

The latest meeting was a straight-sets Medvedev win in Halle. For this matchup, I put more importance on Medvedev's recent hard-court results than on an unbeaten record against an opponent he has faced only twice. His stronger return record suggests a repeatable route to winning: creating chances in service games that Atmane would otherwise need to protect.

## Atmane can make the match depend on tiebreaks

Atmane's clearest route is to keep holding and reduce Medvedev's opportunities to separate himself through return games. His latest Almaty victory over Mattia Bellucci required three tiebreaks. Across his career, Atmane won 80 of 138 tiebreaks. Close sets offer an opening.

Medvedev's career tiebreak record was 161 wins from 289, so his broader return advantage does not translate into a clear advantage by this measure. If Atmane keeps sets on serve, the forecast becomes less comfortable for the favorite. His win over Bellucci supplies a recent example of success in a match decided entirely by tiebreak sets, without establishing how often either player broke serve.

Recent workload is another possible complication: Medvedev played six matches in the last fortnight, compared with Atmane's two. My reading is that the lighter schedule offers Atmane a possible freshness advantage, although his latest victory still extended to a deciding set. Medvedev's task is to create breaks before Atmane can make another set depend on a tiebreak.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Medvedev with a 76% win probability, while the market consensus has him at 83%. Both favor the same player. The model is less emphatic, which fits my reading of a matchup where the favorite's return advantage is substantial but the underdog's service record remains competitive.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Medvedev and agrees with the model. His stronger return record and more consistent recent hard-court results provide the tennis case, rather than a large difference in service security. Court Shark's scoreline forecast gives Medvedev a 54% chance of winning in straight sets, with a median total of 22 games.

The middle half of projected outcomes runs from 19 to 29 games, leaving room for close sets rather than implying a short match throughout. Atmane's most important task is to prevent his service games from becoming the repeated opening that his opponent's return record suggests.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
