Key takeaway

Paul's advantage comes from holding serve, not breaking more often. Moutet needs better protection of his own service games to challenge the favorite.

Tommy Paul faces Corentin Moutet in the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes quarterfinals. His advantage is on serve, not return, and Court Shark's model gives him a 70% chance to win.

## A semifinal place, with Paul's serve the dividing line

Friday's Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes quarterfinal in Lyon sends either [Corentin Moutet](https://courtshark.ai/players/corentin-moutet-144895) or [Tommy Paul](https://courtshark.ai/players/tommy-paul-126205) into the semifinals. Paul's hard-court holding record gives him the clearest advantage, but their identical breaking rates do not support an edge in both departments. That distinction matters. The case for Paul rests on protecting his own service games more reliably, rather than producing more frequent breaks.

Moutet arrived at this stage on a two-match winning run, while Paul had won seven of his last 10 matches on hard courts. Moutet had split his recent matches on the surface evenly. His wins over Ugo Humbert and Felix Balshaw brought him into this quarterfinal with better immediate results than his broader record suggested. For Paul, the draw now presents an opponent whose recent progress needs to be measured against a much weaker record of holding serve.

### Service games held: where they stand

## Paul holds more often, but the return records are level

Over the past year on hard courts, Paul held 86% of his service games, compared with Moutet's 75%. That is the separation. Against an opponent with the same recent breaking rate, Paul's stronger service record suggests he should face fewer games in which a break becomes available.

Both players broke in 23% of their return games, matching the tour average on this surface. There is no measured return advantage here, so describing Paul as stronger at both holding and breaking would overstate the evidence available for this matchup.

The tour's holding average was 77%, putting Moutet below that benchmark and Paul comfortably above it. Paul's sample also contained more matches, although these were records against different opponents rather than a controlled comparison. The practical reading is narrower than a general claim of superiority: Moutet needs to protect serve better than his recent surface record suggests, while Paul's return need not improve for that weakness to matter.

## Moutet has already taken Paul to a deciding set

Their only previous hard-court meeting offers a concrete reason to resist treating the service gap as decisive before play begins. Paul won at Delray Beach in February, but needed a deciding set after losing the opener. Moutet had a route into that match. Paul also won their earlier meeting on clay, leaving the hard-court comparison dependent on a single result rather than a repeated pattern.

A longer match would not bring an obvious historical advantage for Paul in deciding sets. Across their careers, Moutet won 102 of 177 deciders. Paul won 127 of 220, a closely comparable record despite his stronger standing in this matchup. Those career results do not predict how either player will finish on Friday. They do suggest that if Moutet holds often enough to extend the contest, Paul's broader service advantage is a less complete answer to what happens next.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Paul with a 70% win probability, while the market consensus gives him 74%. Both favor the same player. The model is less emphatic than the market, with the surface records offering a clear service advantage but no corresponding advantage in breaking serve.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Paul and agrees with the model. His stronger holding record and better recent hard-court results support that choice, while the level return records keep the argument focused on his serve. The scoreline forecast has a median of 21 total games.

The middle half of forecast outcomes runs from 18 to 28 games, leaving room for either a relatively short match or a more extended contest. That is a range, not an exact total. Moutet's most concrete route to changing the forecast is to make his service games less vulnerable than they were over the past year.

Picks Tommy Paul (agrees with the model)

Its case: Tommy Paul has won both prior meetings, including their only hard-court match, and brings a 7-3 recent hard-court record versus Corentin Moutet’s 5-5; his hard-court serve has also held 82.2% of the time compared with 75.0%, while he wins 73.4% of first-serve points to Moutet’s 66.7%.

The risk it names: The main danger is workload: Paul has played 542 minutes and 12 sets over the last 14 days, whereas Moutet arrives off two Lyon wins, including a three-set victory over Ugo Humbert.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
