Key takeaway

Rybakina's advantage lies in protecting serve, not breaking it. Kudermetova broke slightly more often on hard courts, but needs steadier service games to make that difference count.

Elena Rybakina faces Polina Kudermetova in Ningbo's round of 16 with a clear advantage on serve, but not on return. Court Shark's model gives Rybakina an 82% chance of winning.

## A quarterfinal place rests on a lopsided service matchup

The round of 16 at Ningbo sends the winner of Thursday's match between [Elena Rybakina](https://courtshark.ai/players/elena-rybakina-10214981) and [Polina Kudermetova](https://courtshark.ai/players/polina-kudermetova-10221236) into the quarterfinals. Rybakina's hard-court service record gives her the stronger case, though Kudermetova actually broke serve slightly more often over the same period. The distinction matters. This is a forecast built around protecting serve, rather than superiority in both parts of the game.

Rybakina entered as No. 1, while Kudermetova was ranked No. 105, giving this match a substantial ranking gap alongside the difference in service performance. Rybakina had won eight of her last 10 matches on hard courts. Kudermetova had split her recent hard-court matches evenly, but arrived on a three-match winning run. That recent success gives the underdog something more immediate to draw on than her broader record.

## Rybakina's advantage is holding, not breaking

Over the past year on hard courts, Rybakina held 84% of her service games, compared with Kudermetova's 67%. That is the clearest separation. If those patterns carry into Ningbo, Rybakina should have more room to survive an unproductive return game without falling behind in the set.

The return comparison points the other way: Kudermetova broke in 34% of her return games, while Rybakina broke in 32%. Those figures do not support the idea that Rybakina has an edge in both holding and breaking, even though she remains the stronger overall pick. Kudermetova's route begins with making that return advantage count against a much more reliable server.

The samples covered 51 matches for Rybakina and 29 for Kudermetova. These are substantial records, but they describe performances against different opponents, not what either player must produce in this particular match. My reading is that Rybakina's service advantage matters more than the smaller difference on return.

## Recent match play gives Kudermetova an opening

Rybakina had gone 18 days without a match, while Kudermetova had played four times over the past fortnight. Rust is the immediate concern. If Rybakina's service reliability takes time to return, Kudermetova's recent competition offers a concrete route to making the early games less comfortable for the favorite.

Their only previous meeting ended in a Rybakina victory in Berlin in 2023\. It was on grass, so that result offers little direct evidence about how Kudermetova's return will hold up against Rybakina on this surface. The useful test is whether Kudermetova can pressure service games here, rather than whether she can reverse an old result elsewhere.

Kudermetova also needs her own serve to outperform its broader hard-court record. Breaking Rybakina occasionally will have limited value if she immediately gives those games back. Sustained holds would force Rybakina to find more on return, the part of this comparison where the favorite has no statistical advantage.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Rybakina with an 82% win probability, while the market consensus has her at 86%. Both favor her clearly. The model is less emphatic than the market, which has remained unchanged since its opening reading.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Rybakina and agrees with the model's choice. The tennis case rests on her ability to protect service games far more consistently, rather than on any advantage in breaking serve. A straight-sets Rybakina win is the likeliest result, and the forecast median is 19 total games.

The middle half of forecast outcomes runs from 17 to 25 games, leaving room for competitive sets without requiring a deciding set. Kudermetova's first task is to hold often enough that her small return advantage has time to matter.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
