Key takeaway

Tagger's better hard-court hold and break rates make her a credible alternative, not a decisive favorite. Court Shark's model still gives Samsonova a narrow edge.

Lilli Tagger's stronger hard-court hold and break rates make Osaka's round of 32 a close matchup. Court Shark's model narrowly favors Liudmila Samsonova with a 52% win probability.

## Tagger leads on serve and return

Monday's Osaka round of 32 match between [Lilli Tagger](https://courtshark.ai/players/lilli-tagger-10260172) and [Liudmila Samsonova](https://courtshark.ai/players/liudmila-samsonova-10214643) offers the winner a place in the next round. Tagger's advantage in holding and breaking serve on hard courts makes a credible case for her, rather than a decisive one. The surface comparison favors Tagger.

Neither player arrives with a winning run, so this assignment offers both a chance to turn uneven recent results into progress through the draw. Tagger held 75% of her service games in the hard-court sample, compared with Samsonova's 69%. That suggests Tagger has the stronger foundation for protecting serve.

Tagger also won 36% of her return games, against Samsonova's 33%, over the past year on this surface. Her advantage therefore extended beyond serving. Tagger's sample covered 40 matches, while Samsonova's covered 30\. The combination gives Tagger a practical route to victory: protect her own service games and make Samsonova defend hers.

### Service games held: where they stand

Each dot is one of the WTA top 100 with enough matches in the last 52 weeks. Lilli Tagger is 25th of 65; Liudmila Samsonova is 34th of 65.

## Recent results weaken the surface argument

The recent results are less persuasive. Each player went 5-5 across her latest completed matches, leaving neither with a clear advantage in current results despite Tagger's stronger hard-court game rates. Their recent records on this surface were also evenly split. The longer surface record supports Tagger more strongly than her immediate form does.

Tagger lost her last three matches, while Samsonova also enters after a defeat. Those results complicate the argument that Tagger's serve and return advantages make her the better pick now. Her latest defeat came against Nikola Bartunkova after the match reached a deciding set. Samsonova's latest loss was against Elina Svitolina.

Their only previous meeting went to Tagger in Linz, where she won 6-2 7-6(11). That victory came on clay, making it less relevant to Osaka than the hard-court serve and return records. Tagger nevertheless enters with a previous win over this opponent, alongside the stronger surface profile.

## A close finish could favor Tagger

A deciding set offers a concrete route for Tagger to overturn the forecast, particularly if her service advantage keeps Samsonova from separating earlier in the match. Tagger won 13 of 23 career deciding sets. That winning record supports her case in a prolonged contest.

Samsonova won 58 of 113 career deciding sets, a much larger record with a lower winning share. Experience alone favors neither finish. Tagger's career results give her a reasonable basis for welcoming a deciding set rather than needing to finish the match quickly.

The earlier stages matter just as much. Samsonova's weaker hard-court hold record leaves an identifiable opening for Tagger, while Tagger's recent losing run shows that such advantages have not consistently produced wins. Samsonova can change the terms by holding often enough to deny Tagger repeated chances to recover from a loose service game. For Tagger, the practical test is turning her return advantage into breaks while preserving the stronger part of her own game.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model narrowly favors Samsonova with a 52% win probability, while the market consensus has her at 57%. This is a slight preference. Tagger's stronger hold and break rates argue against treating Samsonova as a comfortable favorite, even though both forecasts favor the same player overall.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, picks Tagger and disagrees with the model. Her advantages on both sides of serve provide the strongest reasons for that choice, with her previous victory offering additional support. Court Shark's scoreline forecast puts the median total at 21 games.

The middle half of forecast outcomes runs from 18 to 28 games, allowing for either a relatively short result or a more extended contest. That range describes the likely match length rather than an exact total. Samsonova's ability to protect her own service games is the clearest place for the narrow forecast in her favor to be tested.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
