Key takeaway

Shelton's stronger return record supports the model's pick. Kovacevic's nearly identical service hold rate and Shelton's break from competition make the market's more cautious estimate defensible.

Ben Shelton faces Aleksandar Kovacevic in the Swiss Indoors Basel round of 32\. Court Shark's model gives Shelton a 95% chance, with his stronger return record supporting favoritism but similar serving numbers arguing for more caution.

## The disagreement is about Shelton's margin

Court Shark's model gives [Ben Shelton](https://courtshark.ai/players/ben-shelton-210097) a 95% chance of winning. The market gives him an 80% chance against [Aleksandar Kovacevic](https://courtshark.ai/players/aleksandar-kovacevic-206499), leaving substantially more room for an upset. Both favor Shelton. The disagreement concerns how much resistance Kovacevic can offer, rather than which player enters with the stronger overall case.

Their meeting in the round of 32 at Swiss Indoors Basel gives Shelton a chance to respond to his Shanghai loss to Arthur Gea. Kovacevic also arrives after a defeat, having lost to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in Basel, so neither brings a winning run into this match.

Shelton went 6-4 across his latest ten matches, while Kovacevic went 3-7\. Those records support the model's choice of favorite, although Shelton's recent results were less convincing than his run to the US Open final. The market's more cautious estimate is defensible, but prices alone cannot explain its reasoning.

## The return gap is larger than the serving gap

Over the past year on hard courts, Shelton held 89% of his service games and Kovacevic held 88%. That is close. It suggests Kovacevic has a credible way to keep sets competitive if his serve maintains its recent standard, despite the broader difference between their results.

Shelton broke in 18% of return games over that period, compared with Kovacevic's 9%. My reading is that this separation offers the strongest tennis argument for a comfortable Shelton win: he has been more capable of creating opportunities against serve. Similar hold records do not mean similar chances when one player has found breaks much more often.

The direct history offers a counterweight, though an old one: Shelton led 3-2, and their latest meeting came in 2022\. Every meeting was on hard courts. Kovacevic's previous wins establish that he has beaten this opponent, but those results cannot establish how closely matched they are now.

### Head-to-head by surface

## Shelton's return from a break is the immediate test

Shelton had gone 15 days without a match at the time of the forecast, while Kovacevic had played three times in the preceding fortnight. Readiness is a live issue. If Shelton takes time to find his usual service level, the similarity in their hold records could become less reassuring for the favorite.

Kovacevic's latest defeat came in two tiebreaks against Mpetshi Perricard. Shelton also lost his latest match in two tiebreaks, against Gea. Those results do not establish how either will serve here, but they illustrate the route to a closer match: sets reaching a few decisive points without a break.

An upset therefore requires more than Shelton starting slowly. Kovacevic needs to preserve his service advantage long enough to make Shelton's stronger return record matter less, or produce more return success than his recent hard-court record suggests.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Shelton by 15 percentage points more than the market does. Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Shelton. The agreement fits the tennis evidence: his better recent results and greater success on return provide a stronger case than Kovacevic's ability to hold serve alone.

Straight sets is the likeliest outcome. Court Shark's scoreline forecast gives Shelton an 82% chance of winning without dropping a set, with a median total of 20 games. That forecast describes a relatively short match, but it does not require Shelton to break repeatedly or win every set by a wide margin.

The middle half of projected outcomes runs from 18 to 23 games, rather than pointing to an exact total. The evidence supports Shelton more clearly than it supports dismissing Kovacevic's chances altogether. The first useful test is whether Shelton can create return openings against a serve that has held almost as often as his own.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
