Key takeaway

Shnaider's stronger hold rate countered Jovic's better recent form. Court Shark gave the eventual winner a 49% chance, so the result went against only a slight preference for Jovic.

Diana Shnaider beat Iva Jovic in three sets at Ningbo after entering with almost an even chance. Jovic's stronger recent record was balanced by Shnaider's higher hold rate, making this a narrow forecast miss rather than a major surprise.

## A competitive match, then a decisive finish

3-6 6-4 1-6 was the score from [Iva Jovic](https://courtshark.ai/players/iva-jovic-10260300)'s side as [Diana Shnaider](https://courtshark.ai/players/diana-shnaider-10223670) won their Ningbo quarterfinal. They split the opening sets. Shnaider then conceded only a single game in the deciding set, producing the widest set margin of the match after Jovic had forced a decider.

Jovic's live win probability reached 65% early in the opening set, then fell to 27% when that set ended. The shift shows how far the outlook changed before Jovic's recovery in the next set, rather than suggesting Shnaider controlled the match from the start.

With the deciding set still level, Jovic's live win probability reached 55%. It later fell to 24% as Shnaider moved ahead. My reading is that the changing probabilities capture a competitive route to the decider, followed by a finish that went firmly in Shnaider's favor.

## Jovic's form met Shnaider's stronger hold rate

Jovic entered with an 8-2 recent record, compared with Shnaider's 7-3\. Their recent hard-court records matched those overall records, so changing the comparison to this surface did not produce a different form leader. Jovic also won their previous meeting in Dubai. Those results supported a slight edge for her rather than a large separation.

Serve offered a counterweight. Shnaider had held 74% of her service games in the available hard-court sample, while Jovic had held 69%. My interpretation is that Shnaider's stronger hold rate provided a meaningful answer to Jovic's recent results, keeping the comparison from pointing entirely in one direction.

Return performance favored Jovic: she had broken in 40% of return games, against Shnaider's 35%. These historical rates do not establish what decided this quarterfinal. They describe a contrast before the match: Jovic had been more productive on return, while Shnaider had been more successful at protecting her service games.

## The model's slight underdog won

Court Shark's pre-match model gave Shnaider a 49% chance of winning. The market consensus had her at 46% as the match began. Both favored Jovic, but the model put the players closer together than the market did, leaving little basis for treating Shnaider's victory as a major surprise.

The pick lost. Yet a forecast that only narrowly prefers a player leaves substantial room for the opponent to win, even when the final set looks one-sided. The winning outcome was the less likely of the pair, not an outcome the forecast had assigned a remote chance.

This result records a miss for the model's preferred player; it cannot establish whether the probabilities are calibrated across matches. The distinction matters here because the forecast estimated the winner before play began, rather than predicting how close each set would be.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
