Key takeaway

Kalinina's previous win was a thin guide to Wuhan. Kartal had the stronger recent hard-court record and a 56% model chance before winning in straight sets.

Sonay Kartal beat Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets at Wuhan despite losing their previous meeting. Court Shark had given Kartal a 56% chance, with recent hard-court form offering a better guide than the old result.

## The old result was a weak guide

The previous meeting pointed the wrong way at Wuhan. [Anhelina Kalinina](https://courtshark.ai/players/anhelina-kalinina-10211843) had beaten [Sonay Kartal](https://courtshark.ai/players/sonay-kartal-10222661) in their only earlier encounter, yet Kartal arrived as the favorite and won in straight sets. Kalinina's final score was 5-7 3-6, a clear reversal of the earlier outcome without a deciding set. That matters because a familiar opponent can make a thin history feel more persuasive than the player's current tennis actually warrants.

The ranking gap made the temptation stronger. Kalinina entered at No. 50, while Kartal was No. 129, so both the rankings and the previous meeting offered an easy argument for Kalinina. Neither settled the match. A ranking describes a broader record, while a single encounter captures how those players competed on one particular occasion, under conditions that need not repeat.

Kartal's win also continued her progress since returning from injury and took her into the second round, but the result should not erase the uncertainty beforehand. Court Shark's favorite was still a player with a meaningful chance of losing, rather than someone whose victory could be assumed from the available comparisons. The useful lesson is about proportion. Kalinina's earlier win deserved attention, but it did not deserve to outweigh every sign that this meeting could unfold differently.

### What the model expected, and what happened

## One meeting is not a settled matchup

Kalinina brought a 1-0 head-to-head lead into Wuhan, and the same record applied on hard courts. Those were not separate pieces of support for her. They described the same match twice, once as the overall history and once through the surface filter, which can make a tiny sample sound more substantial. The distinction matters here.

Their previous encounter came at Limoges in December, when Kalinina won 7-6(4) 1-6 6-1\. That score contains more resistance from Kartal than a simple winner's name would suggest, since she took the middle set after losing the opener in a tiebreak. Kalinina finished that match convincingly. Even so, a contest with such different sets gives little reason to assume that every later meeting will follow the same direction or pattern.

A prior win establishes that Kalinina could beat this opponent, not that she held a lasting tactical advantage whenever they shared a hard court. There was no series of repeated results to support that stronger claim, and Wuhan supplied a different outcome rather than another example of the old one. History needed context. The better reading before play was to hold the Limoges result alongside recent performance, instead of letting the familiar winner become the default pick through repetition alone.

## Recent hard-court tennis favored Kartal

The recent records gave a different picture from the rankings. Kalinina entered with a 4-6 record across her latest matches, while Kartal's record was 6-4, and their recent hard-court records matched those respective totals. The surface comparison therefore supported Kartal rather than offering Kalinina a reason to reverse the broader form reading. That was a concrete contrast.

Kartal's latest Beijing results included wins over Andrea Lazaro Garcia and Xin Yu Wang before a loss to Alina Charaeva, so her preparation contained success as well as a setback. Kalinina arrived on a losing run after defeats to Karolina Muchova and Janice Tjen, with the latter match slipping away after she won the opening set. Their schedules differed too. Kalinina had gone 12 days without a match, compared with 7 for Kartal, leaving a more immediate question about Kalinina's match rhythm.

The broader hard-court serving sample offered another reason to resist the ranking shortcut: Kalinina held serve in 63% of service games, against Kartal's 73%. Those figures came from unequal samples, with Kalinina's much smaller, so they should be read cautiously rather than treated as equally established measures of ability. They also cannot explain individual passages of the Wuhan match without a match-specific breakdown. Still, the direction of that comparison fitted the recent results and gave the earlier head-to-head outcome less authority as a standalone guide.

## What the model says

Before the match, Court Shark gave Kalinina a 44% chance of winning and Kartal a 56% chance. This was a modest preference. Kartal's eventual straight-sets victory agreed with the model's pick, but the winning margin should not be read backward as proof that the match was an obvious call. The estimate left considerable room for Kalinina to win, which is important when judging a prediction after the result is known.

The market consensus at the start put Kalinina at 39% and Kartal at 61%, making the market more confident in Kartal than Court Shark was. Both favored the same player. That agreement separates this result from an upset of the pre-match expectation, even though Kartal beat a higher ranked opponent who had won their previous encounter. The ranking story and the probability story were different, and the latter described Kartal as the likelier winner before she stepped on court.

Kalinina's opening market probability was 37%, and the price moved toward her by 2 percentage points before play, without changing the favorite. That shift is a useful check against describing every pre-match signal as pointing more strongly toward Kartal as the start approached. The result supports the pick, not certainty. For another meeting, a sustained improvement in Kalinina's hard-court results or a fresh fitness concern for Kartal would change the analytical call more than the old Limoges win alone.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
