Key takeaway

Kartal has reached the Wuhan quarterfinals without losing a set. Her wins over Bencic and Paolini provide strong results to build on after a lengthy back injury absence.

Sonay Kartal beat Jasmine Paolini in straight sets to reach the Wuhan Open quarterfinals. Her return from a back stress fracture now includes five wins in seven matches.

## Kartal gives Paolini no opening

Sonay Kartal moved into the Wuhan Open quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over former Wimbledon finalist [Jasmine Paolini](https://courtshark.ai/players/jasmine-paolini-10211148). The British player kept her baseline level steady while Paolini's unforced errors helped turn the match into a comfortable win, extending an encouraging return from injury. There was little room for resistance.

Paolini, ranked No. 33, could not disrupt Kartal's control of the rallies. Kartal said she knew she needed to stay solid throughout against an opponent of Paolini's quality, and her assessment afterward matched the score. "From my side, it was a pretty flawless performance." The result adds another strong opponent to the list of players Kartal has beaten since returning.

## A patient recovery starts paying off

The win follows another straight-sets victory, against [Belinda Bencic](https://courtshark.ai/players/belinda-bencic-10202505), who is currently ranked No. 12\. Kartal has yet to lose a set in Wuhan, having also beaten Anhelina Kalinina before taking on the former Olympic champion and then Paolini. Her level has held up. She entered the tournament using a protected injury ranking, but her results have quickly made the comeback about more than simply returning to competition.

A stress fracture in her back had kept Kartal away for more than six months, interrupting a season that had begun with a climb into the top 50\. The pain became severe enough to make brushing her teeth difficult. Missing Wimbledon was especially hard after her run to the fourth round there last season, but she resisted rushing back.

## Picking up an interrupted season

Before the injury, Kartal had reached two WTA quarterfinals and earned wins against established opponents. At Indian Wells, she beat [Madison Keys](https://courtshark.ai/players/madison-keys-10201619), the 2025 Australian Open champion, and Emma Navarro before facing Elena Rybakina in the fourth round. That run ended with a retirement. What initially seemed likely to be a short absence instead required a much longer recovery from the first serious injury of her career.

Kartal's return began representing Great Britain at the BJK Cup, where a narrow loss still left her encouraged by a level higher than she had expected. She then reached the third round in Beijing on her return to the WTA Tour. Confidence has followed those matches. Wuhan has now given her another chance to build on that progress.

## Svitolina awaits in the quarterfinals

Elina Svitolina is next for Kartal in Friday's quarterfinals, with the British player looking to extend a run built on consistent baseline play and victories without dropping a set. The comeback has gathered pace. Five wins from seven matches since her return give Kartal a firm set of results after months when competing was not possible.

In Shanghai, Alexander Zverev also advanced, beating Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4 in their Masters quarterfinal. Already assured of ending the season as ATP world number one, Zverev will meet Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the semifinals after his comfortable win over the Australian. For Kartal, the immediate task remains Svitolina and another test of the level she has sustained through Wuhan.
