Key takeaway

Cirstea's stronger recent form makes her the favorite, but Court Shark gives her 69% against the market's 86%. Guo's hard-court record and return figures offer more resistance than her ranking suggests.

Sorana Cirstea brings the stronger recent results to Wuhan, but her long layoff adds uncertainty against Hanyu Guo. Court Shark gives Cirstea a 69% chance, well below the market consensus.

## The ranking gap is only the starting point

240 is [Hanyu Guo](https://courtshark.ai/players/hanyu-guo-10215250)'s ranking entering Wuhan, which makes her the clear outsider against [Sorana Cirstea](https://courtshark.ai/players/sorana-cirstea-10201514), ranked No. 17\. The gap is substantial. Yet reputation alone doesn't settle how competitive this match should be, especially when the favorite returns after an extended break from competition. Their Tuesday meeting on hard courts asks whether Cirstea's stronger results will carry through immediately, or whether Guo can make her return uncomfortable.

Guo's recent record is 2-8, while Cirstea's is 6-4\. Form supports the favorite. Guo arrives on a five-match losing run, so the ranking difference has a clear counterpart in results rather than standing alone as an argument. Cirstea also lost her latest match, but her recent sequence includes a productive US Open run. The distinction is between a player struggling to find wins and a player whose successful stretch ended against Jessica Pegula.

Timing complicates that comparison: Guo last played 6 days ago, while Cirstea has been away from competition for 36 days. Freshness isn't the same as readiness. Guo has the more recent match experience, although her latest appearance still ended in defeat. Cirstea's break leaves a question about her opening level, rather than proof that her form has disappeared. That uncertainty matters when judging how strongly to favor her.

## Recent results favor Cirstea, with some resistance

Cirstea's US Open wins over Julia Grabher, Diane Parry and Jasmine Paolini all came in straight sets. Those were convincing results. She then lost to Pegula, who had also beaten her in Cincinnati after a deciding set. That sequence gives her favorite status a firmer foundation than her ranking alone, because it includes consecutive wins without needing to recover from a lost opening set. The interruption since then is the main qualification.

Guo's latest defeat, against Aliona Falei in Suzhou, went to a deciding set. She also pushed Mccartney Kessler to a deciding set at Roland Garros, despite eventually losing that match. There is resistance here. Those results don't erase the losing run, but they prevent every defeat from being read as evidence that she couldn't stay competitive. Her task in Wuhan is to turn sustained competition into a win, rather than merely extend another opponent.

On hard courts, Guo's recent record is 5-5, compared with Cirstea's 6-4\. The surface comparison is closer. Guo's overall struggles therefore tell a harsher story than her recent results on the surface used in Wuhan. Cirstea still has the advantage, and her latest successful stretch came on hard courts, but this is a more useful comparison than assuming Guo's overall losing record describes every setting equally well. It leaves room for a competitive match without making Guo the likelier winner.

## Guo's return offers a route into the match

The hard-court service figures favor Cirstea: she has held 75% of her service games, compared with Guo's 64% in their respective samples. That is Guo's problem. If both players reproduce those patterns, Cirstea should have an easier time protecting her own games while Guo faces more frequent pressure. Guo needs enough stability on serve to keep her return opportunities meaningful. Breaking back repeatedly is a difficult way to sustain a challenge against the favorite.

The return comparison runs the other way, with Guo breaking in 42% of return games and Cirstea in 38%. Guo has a route in. These are records against different opponents, so they aren't a direct forecast of how often either player will break in Wuhan. Still, they give a concrete reason to watch Guo's return games rather than dismiss her chances solely through ranking. Her better return figure contrasts with the weakness in her service record.

Across the broader hard-court samples, Guo's record is 24-16 and Cirstea's is 23-9\. Cirstea remains the stronger surface performer. The comparison also shows why Guo's recent overall record shouldn't be mistaken for an absence of hard-court success. There is no previous meeting to establish how their games fit together, leaving the serve and return contrast as a useful starting point. Guo's challenge is to pressure Cirstea without leaving her own service games too exposed.

## What the model says

Court Shark gives Sorana Cirstea a 69% chance of winning and Hanyu Guo a 31% chance. Cirstea is the pick. The probability comparison favors the player with the better recent record, while leaving meaningful room for the outsider to win this first meeting. That is compatible with the tennis picture: Cirstea has the stronger service record and more recent wins, but Guo's hard-court results are less bleak than her overall form suggests.

The market consensus has Cirstea at 86% and Guo at 14%, unchanged from the opening reading. The market is firmer. It agrees on the favorite but expresses considerably less uncertainty about her return to competition than Court Shark's estimate does. There has been no price movement toward either player, so this is a difference in the level of confidence rather than a story about a changing market view. Neither estimate makes the result certain.

The gap between model and market on Cirstea is 17 percentage points. It isn't an upset prediction. For Guo, the practical test is whether her return can create pressure while her serve holds up well enough to preserve it through the match. For Cirstea, the question is whether her stronger form survives the interruption without an uneven start. The winner would enter the next round having either confirmed Cirstea's return to competition or given Guo a break from her losing run.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
