Key takeaway

The market favors Siniakova, but Court Shark's model sees an even match. Stearns' stronger recent hard-court results and service protection support the AI analyst's opposing pick.

Katerina Siniakova faces Peyton Stearns in Osaka's round of 32 with more support from the market than from Court Shark's model, which gives her a 50% win probability. Siniakova's broader hard-court record supports her case, but recent results and serving figures favor Stearns.

## A market favorite without a model edge

The market makes [Katerina Siniakova](https://courtshark.ai/players/katerina-siniakova-10211701) the favorite. Court Shark's model puts her level with [Peyton Stearns](https://courtshark.ai/players/peyton-stearns-10220548). The disagreement is about whether Siniakova deserves an edge, rather than whether she can win, and the evidence offers a case for each reading.

Tuesday's match in Osaka's round of 32 gives both players an opportunity to interrupt losing runs before advancing further in the hard-court draw. Neither arrives in winning form. Siniakova had lost her last two matches, while Stearns had lost her last three. Siniakova also had some successful tournament experience: she won three matches and lost one in her previous Osaka main-draw appearance.

The broader surface record offers support for Siniakova's favorite status. Across their last 50 matches with full statistics, she went 20-17 on hard courts, while Stearns went 19-19\. That comparison supports a modest preference, though it does not explain why the market settled on its price.

## Recent hard-court results favor Stearns

The shorter view points away from Siniakova. She went 3-7 in her last 10 hard-court matches, a weaker stretch than her broader surface record and a reason to resist making her a clear favorite. Stearns split her corresponding matches evenly. Her recent record was better, without suggesting that she arrived in especially strong form.

The service figures sharpen that distinction. Over the last 52 weeks on hard courts, Siniakova held 63% of her service games. Stearns held 68%, giving her a better record of protecting serve across that same period. If that difference carries into Osaka, Siniakova may need more frequent return success simply to stay level.

Stearns also led on return. She broke in 36% of return games, compared with Siniakova's 34%. Those figures came against different opponents, so they are not a direct test of this matchup. Still, the combination of better recent results and stronger service protection supports skepticism toward a meaningful Siniakova edge.

## Close sets offer Siniakova a route

Siniakova's case improves if the match becomes a test of converting a few close opportunities rather than sustaining a clear advantage on serve. Her career deciding-set record was 81 wins from 166 matches. Stearns won 22 of 49 career deciders. That gives Siniakova a modest historical advantage, not evidence that a final set belongs to her.

Tiebreak experience offers another possible route. Siniakova won 53 of 92 career tiebreaks, while Stearns won 20 of 35\. The success rates were similar despite Siniakova's much larger sample. Experience alone is no separator. Stearns' better holding record could help her reach those close endings without requiring the same level of return success.

Their only previous meeting went to Stearns at Roland Garros in 2023\. That result supports her ability to beat Siniakova, but a single match on clay cannot establish a dependable hard-court advantage. The decisive question here is whether Siniakova can protect serve better than her recent surface record suggests.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model lists Siniakova as its pick but gives her a 50% chance, leaving no probability edge over Stearns. The market consensus has Siniakova at 56%. Its preference is modest. Siniakova's broader hard-court results and previous Osaka wins support that reading, while the more recent evidence makes the model's level assessment easier to defend.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, picks Stearns and disagrees with the model's listed selection. Her stronger recent hard-court record and better service protection provide concrete reasons for that choice, even though neither player brings a winning run into Osaka. It is a narrow pick, not a claim of clear superiority.

The scoreline forecast has a median total of 21 games. Its middle half runs from 18 to 27 games, allowing for either a relatively short finish or a match extending into a deciding set. Length alone proves little. Siniakova's service games are the specific test: holding more reliably would remove the clearest statistical argument behind the analyst's Stearns pick.

AI analyst

Picks Peyton Stearns (disagrees with the model)

Its case: Stearns gets a narrow hard-court edge: she is 5-5 in her latest 10 on the surface versus Siniakova’s 3-7, held 65.9% of service games to 64.4%, and reached the Guadalajara final before her three-match skid.

The risk it names: Siniakova’s 54% longer-run hard-court win rate and markedly stronger returning profile are the biggest threat, so this remains close despite Stearns having won their lone listed meeting in 2023.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
