Key takeaway

Svitolina's stronger deciding-set and tiebreak records tip a close-match assessment her way. Kartal's recent straight-set wins are the clearest reason that history might not decide this meeting.

Elina Svitolina faces Sonay Kartal in Wuhan's first qualifying round. Svitolina's deciding-set record tips the analysis her way if they go the distance; Court Shark's model gives her a 59% chance overall.

## Svitolina has the stronger record in tight finishes

The first qualifying round at Wuhan brings [Elina Svitolina](https://courtshark.ai/players/elina-svitolina-10202494) and [Sonay Kartal](https://courtshark.ai/players/sonay-kartal-10222661) together on Friday. Svitolina's career record in deciding sets gives her the stronger case if this match reaches a third set, though it doesn't establish a separate match-specific probability. The distinction matters here. Her advantage concerns how often she finished such matches successfully, rather than an assurance that experience settles the next close contest.

Svitolina entered with a two-match winning run, while Kartal had won her last three, leaving both with recent results to support their qualifying prospects. Their previous hard-court meeting also went the distance, making the question more immediate than a comparison of career records alone. Svitolina had won 64% of her deciding sets. Kartal had won 39%, a substantial difference that favors Svitolina if the opening sets are split.

The tiebreak records pointed in the same direction: Svitolina won 56%, compared with Kartal's 32%. That agreement strengthens the case because it extends beyond deciding sets to another kind of close finish. Svitolina's record also covered a much larger body of matches, while Kartal's shorter history left more room for those percentages to change. These are useful historical guides, not proof of an unchanging ability to handle pressure against every opponent.

## A deciding set is a substantial part of the forecast

Court Shark's scoreline forecast gives this match a 50% chance of reaching a deciding set, so Svitolina's advantage in that situation is central to the prediction. It isn't a remote possibility. The same forecast gives her a 31% chance of winning in straight sets, which makes a comfortable favorite's result less persuasive than the ranking difference might suggest. The forecast leaves considerable room for Kartal to take a set or win outright.

Their latest meeting supplied a direct example of how little separated them on hard courts. Svitolina won their January meeting in Auckland in three sets. That result supports her ability to finish this particular matchup, but its narrowness also cautions against treating the head-to-head as evidence of clear superiority. Kartal took a set in their only previous meeting on this surface, which gives her a more relevant reference than the overall series alone.

Svitolina led their overall series 2-0, with the other victory coming on clay in Madrid. The surface distinction matters because the more relevant meeting for Wuhan was also the closer one, and there was only one hard-court encounter to examine. Her unbeaten record against Kartal therefore supports the pick without settling it. Taken together, the previous meeting and the scoreline forecast make a long match plausible, while the career pressure records provide the stronger reason to favor Svitolina at its end.

## Kartal's recent results can outweigh the career pattern

Kartal's recent form is the clearest reason the forecast could be wrong: she won seven of her last 10 matches, including her latest three without dropping a set. Her most recent victory came against Jasmine Paolini, and Belinda Bencic was also among those opponents. Those results don't erase the career deciding-set gap. They do offer a concrete route to avoiding that comparison altogether, by sustaining a level that prevents Svitolina from taking the match into a third set.

The longer hard-court service records also complicate a prediction built around Svitolina's superior close-match history. Over the past 52 weeks, both players held 72% of their service games, giving neither an advantage by that measure. Svitolina's return record was slightly stronger. If Kartal matches that return performance on the day, the underlying service figures offer little reason to expect Svitolina to create a comfortable separation before the closing games.

Workload supplies another possible complication, although it doesn't point cleanly toward either player. Both had played six matches in the last 14 days, and both had competed on the day before this scheduled meeting. Neither arrived with an obvious rest advantage. If Svitolina's recent schedule affects her ability to sustain her level through a long match, a better career record in deciders won't compensate automatically. Kartal's similarly busy schedule makes that a shared concern rather than a reason to switch the pick.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Svitolina, giving her a 59% chance against Kartal's 41%. The edge is modest. That fits a matchup in which the stronger career record in close finishes sits alongside a competitive recent meeting and an opponent arriving with convincing wins. Svitolina is the pick, but the evidence supports a contested match rather than an expectation that she controls it throughout.

The market consensus gives Svitolina a 65% chance, down from an opening assessment of 68%. The price moved toward Kartal, although the market remains more favorable to Svitolina than Court Shark's model by six percentage points. Both assessments still identify the same favorite, but neither the movement nor the gap supports treating Kartal as a distant possibility. Her recent wins provide a tennis explanation for caution, even though they do not erase Svitolina's longer record.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Svitolina and gives her a 62% chance. That agrees with the model's choice while expressing slightly more confidence in the favorite. Court Shark's scoreline forecast projects 23 total games, consistent with a match that offers Kartal room to compete rather than a quick exit. A deciding set favors Svitolina's historical case, but Kartal's latest victory over Paolini came without dropping a set.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
