Key takeaway

Swiatek has the advantage on both serve and return on hard courts. Frech's best route to a competitive match is to protect her service games before Swiatek's return pressure takes control.

Iga Swiatek has the stronger hard-court serve and return record heading into her Wuhan match against Magdalena Frech. Court Shark gives Swiatek an 88% chance of winning.

## Frech's service games are the pressure point

[Magdalena Frech](https://courtshark.ai/players/magdalena-frech-10211684) needs her serve to keep this match competitive. [Iga Swiatek](https://courtshark.ai/players/iga-swiatek-10216347) has broken opponents in 41% of return games in her hard-court sample, while Frech has held 68% of service games. That is the central contest. If Frech spends her service games defending after the return, she will struggle to create enough breathing room to challenge the favorite in Wuhan.

The Polish players meet on Wednesday, October 14, with a clear difference in their ability to protect serve and apply pressure against it. Frech's route is narrower. She needs service games that let her start rallies on balanced terms, rather than asking her defense to rescue every difficult position. Swiatek can threaten from either side of the serving cycle, which gives her more ways to recover from a loose game. The question is how often Frech can stop that pressure before it becomes a break opportunity.

## Swiatek has more protection on serve

Swiatek has held 76% of her hard-court service games in the statistical sample, compared with an all-years tour average of 63%. Her serve provides a cushion. A player who regularly protects service games can pursue breaks without needing every return game to produce an immediate reward, especially against an opponent with less reliable holds. That matters here because Frech cannot afford to spend the entire match trying to repair damage on her own serve.

Frech has broken serve in 35% of return games, below the tour benchmark of 37%. Those figures describe a threat, not an absence of one. Swiatek still needs to avoid offering Frech repeated chances to begin return rallies comfortably and turn a service game into a prolonged contest. For Frech, simply putting returns in play will not be the whole task. She needs enough pressure on Swiatek's serve to make her own holds count toward something more than survival.

## Recent results favor Swiatek, with a warning

Swiatek arrives with a 7-3 record across her recent matches, while Frech is 5-5\. The same records apply to their recent hard-court matches. The advantage is clear. Yet the sequence of results leaves room for caution, because Swiatek's most recent appearance ended in defeat rather than another comfortable step forward. Her Beijing loss to Elise Mertens followed wins over Xinyu Gao, Donna Vekic and Iva Jovic, so the setback interrupted a productive stretch.

Frech's latest completed match was a win over Mananchaya Sawangkaew after a loss to Aoi Ito. She has a fresh win. Her recent Wuhan results include a victory over Moyuka Uchijima that ended with a retirement, making that match less useful as proof of sustained control. Swiatek's comeback against Vekic offers a different observation: losing the opening set did not end her challenge. Neither player's latest result should replace the broader comparison of how they hold and break serve.

## Hard-court results support the same reading

Frech's broader hard-court record is 21-19, while Swiatek's is 27-10 in the matches covered by the surface comparison. This is no clay-only argument. Swiatek's advantage carries onto the surface they will play in Wuhan, where both the service and return figures favor her. The match records describe the eventual outcomes, while the hold and break rates help explain where the contest could become uneven once play starts.

The serving samples cover 40 matches for Frech and 37 for Swiatek. That is a broader view than the latest tournament alone, though it cannot tell us exactly how either player will serve on this occasion. Frech has played more often during the recent fortnight, and Swiatek has had more time since her last match. Rest is not a result. The practical issue is whether Frech can maintain the quality of her service games when Swiatek keeps demanding another difficult rally.

## Their previous meeting is a limited guide

Swiatek leads their head-to-head 1-0, with the only meeting coming on clay in Warsaw. History favors her. But a single match on another surface is a limited guide to how Frech's serve will stand up to return pressure in Wuhan. The current hard-court comparison offers a more direct basis for assessing this matchup than treating their previous encounter as a script that must repeat.

That Warsaw match ended 6-1 6-2 in Swiatek's favor. Frech will need a much more competitive serving performance to keep the current meeting from taking on a similarly uneven shape, though the old score cannot predict it. Attention around Swiatek's partnership with coach Francisco Roig adds a separate storyline before Wuhan. It does not establish how she will play. Her recent loss is a concrete reason to avoid assuming an effortless match, while her stronger service and return records remain the clearest reasons to favor her.

## What the model says

Court Shark gives Swiatek an 88% chance of winning and Frech a 12% chance. Swiatek is the clear pick. There is no market consensus available for comparison, so there is no supported claim about a gap between the model and the market. The probability is a statistical estimate rather than a promise, and Frech's chance remains meaningful even in a matchup with such a strong favorite.

The tennis case centers on Swiatek's ability to pressure Frech's service games while protecting her own more consistently across the hard-court sample available for comparison. Frech needs to disrupt that pattern. Competitive holds would give her time to test Swiatek's response after the Mertens defeat, while frequent early pressure on serve would leave little room to build an upset. A close opening alone would not settle that tension. The next round would bring either the strongly favored Swiatek or a Frech who had overcome a difficult serve-versus-return matchup.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
