Key takeaway

Swiatek's advantage on both serve and return supports Court Shark's 90% win probability. Frech needs to protect her service games better than her hard-court record suggests to make the upset plausible.

Iga Swiatek's advantage in holding and breaking serve makes her the clear pick against Magdalena Frech at Wuhan on Wednesday. Court Shark's model gives Swiatek a 90% win probability, though the forecast leaves room for a deciding set.

## Swiatek brings the stronger hard-court record to Wuhan

The hard-court record over the past year shows [Iga Swiatek](https://courtshark.ai/players/iga-swiatek-10216347) held 77% of her service games, the clearest starting point for her match against [Magdalena Frech](https://courtshark.ai/players/magdalena-frech-10211684). That gives Swiatek a stronger base on serve before considering her advantage on return, where she also won a greater share of games. Both sides matter. Frech needs to protect her own service games while finding openings against the player with the better holding record.

Wednesday's match at Wuhan determines which player advances in a draw where their recent hard-court results point in different directions. Swiatek won seven of her last 10 matches on the surface. Frech split her last 10 evenly, leaving her with less recent evidence of sustained success against hard-court opponents. For Frech, this is a chance to reverse that comparison in a direct meeting; for Swiatek, it is a chance to respond to her latest defeat.

The ranking difference reinforces the favorite's position without answering the tactical question by itself: Swiatek enters at No. 9, while Frech is No. 48\. Their service and return records offer a more specific reason to favor Swiatek than that ranking gap alone. Frech's task is to change the balance of those games, rather than simply rely on keeping individual sets close.

## Swiatek has an advantage on both sides of serve

Across the 52-week hard-court window, Frech held 69% of her service games. Her serve therefore provides a reasonable platform, even though Swiatek's holding record was stronger. This isn't a comparison between a reliable server and a player who routinely failed to hold. The distinction is that Swiatek combined better service protection with more frequent success in return games, giving her more ways to separate herself during a set.

On return, Swiatek broke in 42% of games, compared with Frech's 35%. That difference puts the harder assignment on Frech's serve: she faces the more successful returner while having the weaker holding record herself. The advantage runs both ways. If their established patterns carry into Wuhan, Swiatek can create pressure without needing Frech to produce an unusually poor serving performance, while Frech needs more than her usual return success.

The tour benchmarks help distinguish their strengths: average holding stood at 63%, while the average break rate was 37%. Both players exceeded the holding benchmark, but only Swiatek exceeded the return benchmark. These were substantial samples, covering 32 matches for Frech and 35 for Swiatek, rather than a brief run at a single event. They support a clear preference, not a predetermined result: the decisive question is whether Frech can hold more consistently against this particular returner than her broader record suggests.

## Frech needs a better serving day, not help from history

Frech's most direct route to an upset is to outperform her established holding record while reducing Swiatek's success in return games. That is a concrete requirement because the surface comparison favors Swiatek in both categories, rather than leaving an obvious weakness for Frech to target. It starts with holding. If Frech protects serve often enough to keep sets level, Swiatek's broader advantage has fewer opportunities to become a lead on the scoreboard.

Recent results provide a reason not to treat the favorite's record as a promise. Swiatek lost her latest match to Elise Mertens in Beijing, while Frech won her latest match against Mananchaya Sawangkaew. Swiatek's defeat included a tiebreak, showing that a close set can still go against her despite the stronger overall profile. Frech also won a tiebreak in her latest victory, although those individual results do not establish a lasting advantage in tight sets.

Their shared history offers limited reassurance for either forecast: Swiatek won their only previous meeting in Warsaw in 2022, and that match was on clay. There is no previous hard-court meeting here to confirm how their surface records translate against each other. Their recent schedules also differ, with Frech having played five matches in the last 14 days and Swiatek four. Frech has the more immediate match practice, but that alone does not show she can solve Swiatek's return.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Swiatek with a 90% win probability, against Frech's 10%. The market agrees exactly with that assessment and has remained unchanged from its opening consensus. There is no disagreement between those two readings about the favorite or the size of her advantage. The tennis case is equally clear: Swiatek's superior holding and breaking records make her the stronger pick, even though neither statistic can decide an individual match in advance.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, independently picks Swiatek at 78%. It agrees on the winner. Its lower confidence leaves more room for Frech to disrupt the expected pattern, particularly if her service games prove harder to break than her surface record suggests. That distinction is useful because agreement on a favorite does not require agreement that the match will be straightforward, especially with no previous hard-court meeting to consult.

The scoreline forecast gives Swiatek a 50% chance of winning in straight sets and assigns a 47% chance to a deciding set. A competitive match therefore fits the forecast, rather than contradicting the strong preference for Swiatek to win. The projected total is 23 games.

The likely range runs from 21 to 25 games. Frech's service games are the specific test: keeping them intact would make Swiatek earn separation through sustained holding rather than repeated breaks.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
