Key takeaway

Tararudee's advantage is in breaking serve, not holding it. Her return record supports an independent pick, but Court Shark's model finds no probability advantage for either player.

Ashlyn Krueger and Lanlana Tararudee meet for a place in Wuhan's next round. Tararudee's return record gives her a credible advantage, but not a decisive one: Court Shark's model gives each player a 50% chance.

## A chance to extend an uneven Wuhan run

A place in Wuhan's next round awaits [Ashlyn Krueger](https://courtshark.ai/players/ashlyn-krueger-10221909) or [Lanlana Tararudee](https://courtshark.ai/players/lanlana-tararudee-10222290) when they meet on Wednesday, October 14\. Tararudee's hard-court return record supplies the clearest argument in her favor, but her service record does not establish an advantage over Krueger. That distinction matters. The match tests whether a substantial difference in breaking serve carries through against an opponent who has held slightly more often.

Both players enter after a win, with neither having produced a consistently winning recent stretch to make this an easy draw assignment for the other. Krueger went 4-6 in her latest matches, while Tararudee went 5-5\. Their recent hard-court records matched those overall records. At Wuhan, advancing would extend a run that has already included a loss and a subsequent win for each player.

Krueger most recently beat Shuai Zhang, while Tararudee defeated Diane Parry in her latest appearance. Those results gave each player an immediate response to a Wuhan defeat, although they did not erase the uneven form that preceded this meeting. Krueger had lost to Yulia Putintseva; Tararudee had lost to Caty Mcnally. Their latest wins provide a useful starting point, but the longer serve and return records offer a firmer basis for comparing how they might secure another.

## Tararudee's advantage is on return, not serve

Over the past year on hard courts, Krueger held 71% of her service games and Tararudee held 70%. The service comparison is close. Tararudee's advantage lies on return, while Krueger narrowly leads on serve. Both players held more often than the tour average, so neither service record alone points to an opponent likely to control the match.

Tararudee broke in 42% of her return games, compared with Krueger's 24%. That is the strongest separation in the matchup, and it gives Tararudee a plausible route to winning without needing a superior service performance of her own. Her break rate exceeded the hard-court tour average, while Krueger's fell below it. If those patterns persist here, Tararudee should have more chances to recover from a dropped service game and put sustained pressure on Krueger's holds.

The samples were unequal: Tararudee's record covered 64 matches, while Krueger's covered 25\. Tararudee therefore maintained her return success across a much larger body of hard-court matches, rather than a brief stretch of favorable results. Still, these are records against different opponents, not a direct measurement of what happens when these players meet. The useful conclusion is specific: Tararudee has the stronger return case, but the holding figures leave room for Krueger to resist it.

## Krueger's serve could limit the return advantage

Krueger's ability to preserve her service record is the most concrete reason Tararudee's return advantage might fail to decide this match on its own. A strong aggregate break rate does not establish how often Tararudee will break this particular opponent. They had never met. Without a previous meeting, there is no direct result showing whether Krueger's serve holds up against Tararudee's return, or whether Tararudee's own serve gives Krueger more opportunities than usual.

The schedule offers another possible source of separation, although it does not establish that either player is physically compromised ahead of this meeting in Wuhan. Krueger played five matches over the past fortnight, compared with four for Tararudee. Krueger also played more recently, while neither player was returning from a long layoff. If that busier stretch affects Krueger's ability to maintain her service level, Tararudee's return record becomes more relevant; if it does not, the schedule adds little to the forecast.

A deciding set would not supply a clear historical advantage either: Krueger won 59% of her career deciders, and Tararudee won 60%. Their records in that situation were nearly identical despite the much wider separation in their hard-court return results. A close match could therefore turn on whether Krueger creates enough breaks to accompany her holds. Tararudee's case weakens if she cannot reproduce her return success and instead has to rely on a narrow advantage in deciding sets.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model nominally picks Krueger, but gives each player a 50% chance, so it shows no probability advantage for either player. The market consensus gives Krueger a 57% chance. That is a firmer preference than the model expresses, and it runs against the strongest argument from the hard-court return comparison. There is no clear favorite here. The model's listed pick should not be read as evidence of a meaningful separation between the players.

The market moved toward Krueger by four percentage points from its opening assessment, leaving a seven-point gap between its current view and Court Shark's model. Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, independently picks Tararudee with a 60% probability. It disagrees with the model's nominal selection. That independent pick fits the return-based argument, although the near equality in holding serve prevents the surface comparison from pointing uniformly toward Tararudee.

Court Shark's scoreline forecast gives a deciding set a 50% chance and puts Krueger's chance of winning in straight sets at 25%. The likely shape is competitive rather than a straightforward win built around one player's superior serve. Tararudee's breaking record makes her a defensible independent pick, but it does not settle the match against a player whose holding record was slightly better. The telling early observation will be whether Krueger can hold regularly while also making Tararudee defend her own service games.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
