Key takeaway

Krueger's better return record is the clearest separator, rather than recent form. Tjen's stronger serving offers a direct way to erase that advantage.

Ashlyn Krueger faces Janice Tjen in Osaka's round of 32, with her stronger return record the clearest separator. Court Shark's model gives Krueger a 53% chance, though Tjen's serving makes this a close matchup.

## Krueger's return record provides the clearest edge

Monday's round of 32 match in Osaka offers [Ashlyn Krueger](https://courtshark.ai/players/ashlyn-krueger-10221909) and [Janice Tjen](https://courtshark.ai/players/janice-tjen-10222145) a chance to advance on hard courts. Krueger's stronger return record is the clearest separator in a matchup where recent results offer little distinction. Neither arrives with a form advantage.

Both won five of their last 10 matches, leaving neither with a stronger recent record as they begin their Osaka campaigns against a familiar opponent. Their latest hard-court results were also evenly divided between wins and losses. That makes the ability to win return games particularly relevant, rather than relying on recent match results to distinguish them.

In the past year's comparison group, Krueger won 31.5% of return games, while Tjen won 25.3%. Tjen finished last among the eligible players; Krueger also sat below the group's median. This is a relative strength for Krueger, rather than evidence of an outstanding return game, and it gives her a plausible route through a closely matched opener.

## Their previous meeting favors Krueger, with a surface caveat

Krueger also won their only previous meeting at Birmingham 125\. That result gives her something more concrete than a comparison of separate schedules: a win against the player across the net, albeit on another surface. The surface limits its relevance.

Her 6-1 6-3 victory came on grass, so the result does not establish how their matchup works on Osaka's hard courts. It supports Krueger's case without settling it. A single meeting offers no evidence of a repeated pattern between them on the surface they face now.

The rankings point the other way, with Tjen at No. 47 and Krueger at No. 68, which complicates any claim of a broad Krueger advantage. The difference leaves the higher-ranked player facing an opponent who won their only encounter. My preference is to give Krueger's return advantage more relevance here than to treat that grass result as a reliable guide to another surface.

## Tjen's serve could narrow the return advantage

Tjen's clearest route to reversing the forecast starts with holding serve, where her recent hard-court record was better than Krueger's across the past year. She held 72% of service games, compared with Krueger's 69%. That matters here. If Tjen protects her service games at that level, Krueger's superior return record may produce too few breaks to decide the match.

A close set would offer another opening for Tjen, whose career tiebreak record stood at 27 wins from 42 played. Those results give her a stronger record in that situation, rather than establishing that a tiebreak is likely. Her serving offers a concrete way to reduce the importance of Krueger's main advantage.

Krueger's career tiebreak record was 23 wins from 45\. The deciding question is whether she can turn her return edge into breaks before Tjen's serving pushes a set toward that narrower finish.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model narrowly favors Krueger with a 53% win probability, while the market consensus puts her at 54%. The estimates are close. Neither supports treating her previous win as evidence that this should be a comfortable assignment on a different surface.

Court Shark's AI analyst picks Tjen, disagreeing with the model. Her stronger serving record offers a concrete argument for that alternative, particularly if Krueger struggles to convert her relative return strength into service breaks. The scoreline forecast has a median total of 21 games.

The middle half of outcomes runs from 18 to 28 games, leaving room for either a relatively short result or a longer contest. That is a range, not an exact match length. Tjen's service games are the place to test the narrow preference for Krueger: secure holds would deny Krueger the breaks her case depends on.

Picks Janice Tjen (disagrees with the model)

Its case: Janice Tjen has the much stronger longer-run hard-court record, 73-27 versus Ashlyn Krueger’s 46-52, and has held serve 74.8% of the time compared with 65.5%; her 69.7% first-serve points won also gives her a meaningful first-strike edge.

The risk it names: The key risk is that her bigger return advantage can disrupt Tjen’s serve-heavy game.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
