Key takeaway

Tsitsipas's return advantage supports Court Shark's model pick, but the serving gap is minimal. Kovacevic can keep the match close if he reproduces his hard-court holding record.

Stefanos Tsitsipas faces Aleksandar Kovacevic in the Almaty Open round of 32\. His stronger hard-court return record supports the favorite, with Court Shark's model giving him a 71% chance, but their serving records are nearly equal.

## A return edge for Tsitsipas in Almaty

A 17% hard-court break rate for [Stefanos Tsitsipas](https://courtshark.ai/players/stefanos-tsitsipas-126774), against 10% for [Aleksandar Kovacevic](https://courtshark.ai/players/aleksandar-kovacevic-206499), is the clearest distinction in their recent serve and return records. Those figures came over the past year. Returning separates them. The difference supports Tsitsipas as the favorite, but it does not suggest that his return alone makes this a straightforward assignment against another reliable server.

Their Almaty Open meeting on Tuesday, October 20, puts a place beyond the round of 32 at issue, with Tsitsipas arriving in better recent form. His immediate task is to turn that broader advantage into a result against an opponent who won their latest meeting. For Kovacevic, that result offers a more encouraging reference than his recent overall record.

Tsitsipas won eight of his last 10 matches, while Kovacevic lost more than he won over the same span. That recent form supports the favorite without resolving the more specific question of how often he can threaten Kovacevic's serve.

## Similar serving, different returning

Tsitsipas held 87% of his service games on hard courts during the past year, while Kovacevic held 86%. That is a narrow separation. If both reproduce those records, the favorite's advantage is more likely to emerge through return games than through a large difference in service security.

The comparison covered 36 matches for Tsitsipas and 38 for Kovacevic, giving each player a substantial surface sample rather than a handful of recent appearances. Those holding rates alone do not establish a clear serving advantage for either player in this matchup. The return comparison provides a stronger reason to separate them.

Both exceeded the hard-court tour holding average of 77%, while both fell below the tour break average of 23%. My reading is that Tsitsipas has the better chance of finding a break, rather than a basis for expecting repeated breaks. Kovacevic's serve offers a credible way to keep sets close despite his weaker return record.

## Kovacevic has already beaten this opponent

Kovacevic won their latest meeting at Winston-Salem in August, leaving their head-to-head level at 1-1, with both matches played on hard courts. That history checks the forecast. Two meetings are too few to establish a lasting matchup advantage, but the latest result shows that the underdog has already won against Tsitsipas on this surface.

A match with few breaks could also make tiebreak performance more important than the gap between their return records initially suggests, particularly if Kovacevic protects his serve. Tsitsipas won 212 of 376 career tiebreaks. Kovacevic's career record was less favorable: he won 104 of 216\. Close sets therefore do not automatically favor the underdog.

Readiness is another practical question for Kovacevic after 11 days without a match. He played only once in the last 14 days. If he serves effectively from the start, the return disadvantage may matter less; an uneven opening would give Tsitsipas an earlier opportunity to exploit it.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Tsitsipas with a 71% win probability, while the market consensus has him at 79%. Both favor the same player. The market gives the favorite a stronger chance than the model does, but neither estimate makes the small difference in holding serve decisive by itself.

Court Shark's AI analyst also picks Tsitsipas, agreeing with the model. The stronger returning and better recent form provide the clearest tennis reasons to support that selection, rather than expecting a substantial advantage on serve. The forecast median is 23 total games. That leaves room for competitive sets rather than requiring Tsitsipas to break frequently or establish a large advantage early in the match.

The middle half of forecast outcomes runs from 20 to 31 games, a range that accommodates both a compact result and a longer contest. The return edge supports the pick. Whether it decides this match depends on Tsitsipas converting that advantage against a player whose hard-court service record was almost identical to his own.

Picks Stefanos Tsitsipas (agrees with the model)

Its case: Tsitsipas has the broader hard-court edge: 7-3 in his most recent 10 on the surface versus Kovacevic’s 4-6, an 87.4% hold rate versus 85.4%, and he arrives 8-2 overall with a top-50 win 10 days ago.

The risk it names: Kovacevic’s biggest threat is the matchup itself, he beat Tsitsipas 6-3 7-6(1) in their latest hard-court meeting, and Almaty’s indoor 848m, 1.16-speed conditions should reward his 12.5% ace rate, so this is not a runaway pick.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
