Our forecast before the match: Alexander Zverev 71% to win.

Key takeaway

Zverev's advantage in earlier meetings supports the pick, especially his latest hard-court win in Paris. Davidovich Fokina's recent serving record makes the case for a comfortable repeat less convincing.

Alexander Zverev's record against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina deserves substantial weight in their Rolex Shanghai Masters semifinal, but not blind trust. Court Shark's model gives Zverev a 71% chance despite their matching recent form.

## A familiar favorite, but equal recent form

[Alexander Zverev](https://courtshark.ai/players/alexander-zverev-100644) has the history to make this semifinal appear straightforward. [Alejandro Davidovich Fokina](https://courtshark.ai/players/alejandro-davidovich-fokina-200221) has the recent results to make that reading incomplete.

Saturday's Rolex Shanghai Masters semifinal offers a place in the final to players who both arrived on four-match winning runs. Neither had previously won this tournament. For Zverev, the task is to extend a favorable matchup at the late stages of a Masters event; for Davidovich Fokina, it is to overturn it.

Their form offers little separation. Both went 8-2 over their last 10 matches, and each posted the same record across his latest hard-court appearances. That makes their earlier meetings more useful as a point of distinction, though it does not make those results a substitute for assessing their current tennis.

## The lead is substantial, but the wins varied

Zverev led the head-to-head 6-1 overall and 4-1 on hard courts. The surface record matters here: his advantage was not built mainly on clay results that have less direct relevance to Shanghai. It traveled across surfaces. Even so, seven meetings are too few to treat the historical split as a forecast in itself.

The latest meeting supplied the clearest recent support for Zverev, who won 6-2 6-4 at the Paris Masters last season. That result deserves more weight than their oldest encounters because it was both more recent and played on the same surface as this semifinal.

The other meetings complicate any expectation of another comfortable win. Davidovich Fokina's sole victory came 6-1 6-2 at the Canada Masters, so he had already beaten Zverev decisively on hard courts. Zverev also needed a deciding set in Beijing and consecutive tiebreaks after losing the opening set in Madrid. The record supports the favorite more clearly than it supports an easy afternoon.

### Head-to-head by surface

Alexander Zverev and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina have met 7 times. Alexander Zverev leads 6-1.

## Davidovich Fokina's serve can narrow the difference

Service holds offer Davidovich Fokina a concrete route to making the history less relevant. Over the past year on hard courts, he held 87% of his service games, compared with Zverev's 90%. Those figures suggest he can keep sets close without needing to establish a clear advantage on return.

Breaks may be scarce. Zverev won 19% of his return games in that window, while Davidovich Fokina won 18%. If the underdog protects serve at his recent rate, a small number of return opportunities could decide the match rather than any sustained superiority reflected in their earlier results.

Workload provides another possible complication, rather than evidence of fatigue. Zverev played six matches in the preceding fortnight, compared with four for Davidovich Fokina, although both had the same recovery time since their last match. A serving decline from Zverev would give that difference practical significance; the schedule alone does not establish one.

## The prediction

Court Shark's model gives Zverev a 71% chance of winning, while the market consensus has him at 76%. Both favor the same player. The model's less emphatic assessment fits a matchup in which the historical advantage is clear but the recent results are much closer.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Zverev, agreeing with the model. The latest Paris victory and his stronger service record support that choice more directly than the oldest meetings do. The forecast's median total is 22 games, with a straight-sets Zverev victory the likeliest single result.

The middle half of forecast outcomes spans 19 to 29 games, leaving room for a competitive match even if the favorite advances. The head-to-head should count substantially, not settle the question by itself. Davidovich Fokina's most direct opening is to keep holding serve and force Zverev to decide sets through a handful of return chances.

## Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
