Acosta vs Basilashvili Prediction: Almaty Open 2026 Round of 16

Basilashvili's hard-court results support favoritism in Almaty, but Diaz Acosta's rating and service record make a closer match plausible.

Share

Nikoloz Basilashvili faces Facundo Diaz Acosta in the Almaty Open round of 16. Court Shark's model gives Basilashvili a 53% chance, with recent hard-court results supporting his favoritism but less separating their service records.

Recent results support Basilashvili, but the margin divides opinion

The market makes Nikoloz Basilashvili a clear favorite over Facundo Diaz Acosta. Court Shark's model sees a much closer match. Basilashvili's recent hard-court record was 8-2, while Diaz Acosta's was 4-6. That contrast supports favoring Basilashvili, although those results alone cannot establish how large his advantage should be against this particular opponent on Wednesday.

Their Almaty Open meeting offers a quarterfinal place and a test of whether recent surface form outweighs Diaz Acosta's stronger current ranking. Diaz Acosta entered at No. 69, while Basilashvili stood at No. 128. Basilashvili had won three consecutive matches, including his latest victory over Marin Cilic; Diaz Acosta had ended a losing run by beating Thiago Agustin Tirante. Both arrived with a win, but Basilashvili's stronger sequence gives the market's broader preference a clear basis in results, without revealing why the price took its current position.

Ratings and service records make a closer match plausible

The broader ratings offer a counterweight. Diaz Acosta's latest listed Elo rating was 1887, ahead of Basilashvili's 1816, despite the Georgian's better recent results on this surface. Those readings came from different dates in October, so they are not a simultaneous assessment immediately before this match. Still, the ordering supports caution about treating the recent win totals as a complete measure of their relative strength.

Their hard-court service records also suggest a narrower separation than the recent results might imply: Basilashvili held 84% of service games, compared with Diaz Acosta's 80%. Both figures covered the past year, but Diaz Acosta's sample contained nine matches against Basilashvili's 28. The smaller sample makes the Argentine's record less established. Even so, his ability to keep service games is a concrete reason to expect resistance rather than assume the favorite will control the score.

Return opportunities and workload could alter the balance

The return gap was small. Basilashvili won 19% of return games on hard courts over the past year, while Diaz Acosta won 18%. Neither record suggests an overwhelming ability to break the other's serve, which makes a small number of return opportunities potentially important to the outcome. If Diaz Acosta protects his serve near his recent rate, Basilashvili may need to convert limited chances rather than rely on repeated breaks.

Workload offers another possible route away from the favorite, though it does not establish that either player is tired. Basilashvili had played five matches in the last two weeks, compared with three for Diaz Acosta, and both had played the previous day. There was also no previous meeting to establish a direct matchup pattern. A sustained serving advantage for Diaz Acosta would therefore be meaningful new evidence, while frequent early breaks for Basilashvili would support the market's more decisive reading.

The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Basilashvili with a 53% win probability, while the market gives him 67%. The disagreement concerns degree, not direction. Recent hard-court results support the market's favorite; Diaz Acosta's higher rating and the smaller service gap support the model's more restrained forecast. Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Basilashvili, agreeing with the model on the winner.

Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
