Eala returns in Singapore

Alex Eala will begin at the Singapore Open against Tatiana Prozorova on Thursday. It is her first appearance at this event. Prozorova has already played a match, beating Sofia Costoulas in three sets to earn the meeting. The Russian is ranked No. 180, so Eala faces an opponent with recent court time and a clear reason to press hard early.

The match is fourth on Centre Court. It will not begin before 6.30pm local time, following Joanna Garland's meeting with Xin Wang. Maria Sakkari and Nao Hibino are scheduled after Eala, placing the Filipino player in the evening part of the program. The wait is over.

First match since New York

This is Eala's first match since her US Open defeat to Iva Jovic earlier this month. Jovic has won 9 of her last 10 completed matches, which adds context to a close loss against a player carrying strong recent results. Eala now has to settle quickly after time away from competition. That is the immediate task.

Prozorova has described Eala as an octopus because of the way she covers the court and keeps points alive from difficult positions. Her view was that Eala can reach uncomfortable balls and still hit them with force. That assessment points to long exchanges if Eala gets her feet moving well. It also gives Prozorova a recent reminder that passive tennis will not be enough.

A changed route through the draw

Eala's half of the draw looks different from the one set before play began. Donna Vekic lost in the opening round, removing a seeded player from this side of the event. Vekic has gone 3-7 across her last 10 completed matches. Her exit does not decide Eala's week, but it removes one established opponent from a possible matchup.

Amanda Anisimova also withdrew because of a wrist injury. Anisimova has a 7-3 record across her last 10 completed matches and beat Eala in Cincinnati last month. They had been on course for a possible semifinal meeting. That match is no longer part of Eala's path.

Ranking opportunity ahead

Eala starts the week at No. 18. A victory over Prozorova would move her ahead of Naomi Osaka into 17th, adding ranking value to an opening match that already carries the challenge of returning from a break. The tournament offers a chance to gain ground while several rivals are not playing this week. Every round matters.

A title in Singapore would take Eala to a career best of 14. Sakkari is the only remaining seed Eala could face before the final, although Prozorova must come first. Eala has previous ties to Singapore through the Future Stars program and last year's tournament. Local interest has grown around her return, with fans from the region set to follow her progress closely.
