Alexander Zverev urged to change against rivals

Alexander Zverev has been advised to return earlier and use the net more often against Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Macci calls for a bolder approach

Rick Macci says Alexander Zverev must play with greater intent when he meets Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner. He wants Zverev to create pressure rather than wait for his opponents to lose control. The message is simple. More forward movement could give Zverev a different look in the rallies.

Macci highlighted the German's improving volleys and urged him to attack short balls with conviction. He said Zverev needs the confidence to take chances because Alcaraz and Sinner will not routinely hand over points. Zverev is ranked No. 3. He has won 9-1 across his last ten completed matches, which gives him a strong recent base for a more assertive plan.

Major success came without the top pair

Zverev won the French Open earlier this year, ending his wait for a major title. His route did not include either Alcaraz or Sinner. Sinner went out early, while Alcaraz missed the tournament because of a wrist injury.

The US Open produced another draw without a meeting between Zverev and the pair. Sinner was absent with a knee issue. Alcaraz returned, then lost in the quarterfinals to eventual finalist Ben Shelton. Zverev's title remains a major achievement, yet future matches against his leading rivals will offer a clearer test of this proposed tactical shift.

The head-to-heads set the task

Sinner has posed the tougher direct problem for Zverev. Zverev trails their series 4-11, and Sinner has won their last 10 meetings. Their Wimbledon match this year also went Sinner's way in four sets. That record leaves little room for a passive plan.

The Alcaraz matchup has been closer. Alcaraz leads 7-6, and Zverev served for the match before losing their Australian Open contest in a deciding set. Those margins show Zverev can put Alcaraz under strain. The final stages of those matches have been the harder part for him.

Return position is the central adjustment

Macci's main technical concern is Zverev's position when returning serve. Zverev often waits far behind the baseline. That can give an opponent space to use serve and volley plays or take the next ball early. Macci believes Zverev's backhand is capable of meeting returns sooner.

Stepping closer demands practice. It would also require Zverev to move forward after a shorter reply instead of treating the net as an occasional option. Indoors may suit that approach because his serve can carry more influence there. Against Alcaraz and Sinner, he has been urged to make them uncomfortable from the opening exchanges.
