Carlos Alcaraz Eyes More Doubles in 2027

Carlos Alcaraz's Laver Cup doubles win has prompted him to consider adding more doubles to his 2027 schedule.

Europe takes the opening lead

Carlos Alcaraz and Jakub Mensik opened their Laver Cup campaign by beating Taylor Fritz and Alexander Bublik. The European pair won 6-4, 6-4 at The O2 Arena in London. It was a clean start.

The result put Team Europe in front 3-1 after the opening day. Casper Ruud and Rafael Jodar supplied the other European victories, while Brandon Nakashima earned Team World's lone win. Alcaraz is ranked No. 3 and has an 8-2 record across his last ten completed matches, giving Europe a player arriving with strong recent results.

A format Alcaraz wants to revisit

The win with Mensik made Alcaraz think more seriously about adding doubles to his schedule in 2027. He said he enjoyed the partnership, although singles remains the priority for a player with a demanding calendar.

“I wish I could play more doubles, you know, during the whole year,” Alcaraz said. He explained that recovery between singles matches often takes up the available time. Still, he believes certain tournaments or stretches of the season could leave room for selected doubles appearances.

Team events have supplied the chances

Alcaraz's doubles appearances have mostly come in team competition rather than regular tour events. At the Paris Olympics in 2024, he partnered Rafael Nadal and reached the quarterfinals before Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram ended their run.

His Laver Cup record offers more positive examples. Last year, Alcaraz won doubles matches with Ruud and Mensik for Team Europe. His only defeat in the competition came in 2023, when he and Alexander Zverev lost to Fritz and Ben Shelton in straight sets.

Fritz rematch awaits

Alcaraz has no doubles assignment on the second day. His next appearance is the final singles match against Fritz, who beat him in singles at the previous Laver Cup. That gives Alcaraz an immediate chance to respond.

Fritz is ranked No. 10 and holds a 7-3 record in his last ten completed matches. Bublik, ranked No. 16, is 5-5 over that span. The conversation around future doubles plans can pause while Alcaraz prepares for a high-level singles meeting in London.
