Eala vs Parry: Ningbo win fits the stronger record
Eala's clear Ningbo win fit her ranking and return advantage over Parry, even though their recent win records were identical.
Alexandra Eala's 6-3 6-1 win over Diane Parry matched the direction of her stronger ranking and return record. The margin was more decisive than their identical recent win records alone suggested.
Eala's return record separated otherwise similar form
Eala's win fit the broader record. Alexandra Eala beat Diane Parry 6-3 6-1 in Ningbo, ending her losing run with a clear victory on hard courts. Both entered with a 5-5 record across their latest matches, and their recent records on this surface were identical too. Those results alone offered little reason to expect such a wide margin.
Rankings gave Eala a clearer edge: she entered at No. 19, while Parry was No. 32. Neither arrived in winning form, but Parry's losing run was longer than Eala's. My reading is that the ranking gap made Eala a reasonable favorite despite her recent defeats, rather than a player whose losing run defined the matchup. Her victory agreed with that distinction.
Return performance provided a more specific separation. Eala had won 37.4% of return games in the comparison sample, against Parry's 29.3%, placing Eala above the field median and Parry below it. That suggests Eala had the stronger record of putting pressure on opponents' service games, a useful advantage when recent win totals offered no separation. These are historical rates, however, not a record of how either player returned in Ningbo, so they cannot establish how this match was won.

The forecast picked the winner, not the margin
Court Shark gave Eala a 61% chance of winning before the match. The market consensus had her at 72% as play began. Both favored the eventual winner, but the market expressed greater confidence in Eala than the model did. That distinction matters because a clear victory can make a moderate favorite look more certain afterward than she was beforehand.
The pick was correct. This result cannot establish whether the model or the market offered the better probability estimate, and a win probability is not a forecast of the score. Eala's comfortable passage therefore confirms the selected winner without proving that the more confident estimate was better calibrated. Judging that requires a broader set of forecasts and outcomes, rather than the appearance of certainty created by this score.
For the tennis analysis, recent defeats were a reason to examine Eala's record more closely, rather than dismiss her chances against an opponent with similar results. Parry's matching win total concealed a different ranking and return profile. Those distinctions made a stronger case for Eala than a comparison of recent wins alone, without requiring a forecast of a comfortable victory.

Methodology and sources
How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.
Model estimates and observed results
The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.
Sources and citations
Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.
Limitations
Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
