Rybakina steps away after US Open win

Elena Rybakina has withdrawn from this week's Billie Jean King Cup Finals because of an Achilles problem that continued through her US Open run. She needs at least two weeks of treatment and recovery. Kazakhstan now faces Spain in Shenzhen without its top player.

The injury did not stop Rybakina from winning the US Open and reaching the top of the WTA rankings. That achievement came after a demanding fortnight in New York. She has won nine of her last ten completed matches, a run that explains why she was able to play through discomfort.

Pain began before New York

The Achilles issue began at the Cincinnati Open in mid-August and became serious enough to halt Rybakina's last eight match against Iga Swiatek. Rybakina later said walking was painful. Her recovery before the US Open was therefore limited.

She used painkillers during the tournament. The title showed her level remained high, but it also left little room for a quick return to team competition. Swiatek, listed at No. 1, has won eight of her last ten completed matches, so their interrupted meeting remains a significant marker in the rankings race.

China Open is the likely return point

Rybakina is expected back at the China Open if her treatment proceeds as planned. The WTA 1000 event begins on September 28. It would be her first appearance since the US Open.

Her calendar could become crowded quickly. Wuhan follows on October 12, while further events were part of her schedule last season before the WTA Finals. The immediate task is simpler: protect the Achilles rather than force a full run of tournaments.

Ranking pressure remains for the autumn

The season's final stretch carries ranking consequences for Rybakina, who has 2,410 points to defend before year-end. That makes the timing of her comeback important. Still, the WTA Finals appears to be the central target rather than an event-by-event push.

Aryna Sabalenka remains close in the race after Rybakina overtook her during the US Open. Sabalenka has won eight of her last ten completed matches. Rybakina's decision to miss Shenzhen suggests recovery will determine her schedule, even with a major ranking burden ahead.
