Fery vs Gojo Prediction: Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes 2026 Round of 32

Fery's return record supports the model's favoritism, while Gojo's stronger serving and recent results support the market's closer assessment.

Share

Arthur Fery faces Borna Gojo in the round of 32 at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes. Court Shark's model gives Fery a 66% chance, with his stronger return record supporting favoritism despite Gojo's superior serving numbers.

Fery's ranking meets Gojo's recent results

Court Shark's model makes Arthur Fery a clearer favorite than the market does. The more cautious reading has support in Borna Gojo's serving record and recent results.

Tuesday's round of 32 at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes puts Fery, ranked No. 37, against an opponent arriving on a two match winning run. Fery had lost his most recent match, while Gojo has a chance to extend that run and advance in Lyon. Their recent results favor Gojo.

Fery had gone 6-4 across his last ten matches, while Gojo had gone 7-3. Each had the same record across his last ten on hard courts, so the surface-specific recent results also favored Gojo. That supports caution about Fery, although the win totals alone cannot establish which player faced the more demanding opposition.

Fery's return and Gojo's serve support different readings

The market's opening consensus gave Fery a 64% chance, then moved three percentage points toward Gojo. Fery remained the favorite. That movement establishes a change in expectations, but it does not identify the reason for it or prove that any particular tennis statistic drove the adjustment.

The strongest support for Fery is on return: across the past year's hard-court matches, he broke in 26% of return games, compared with Gojo's 22%. My reading is that this gives Fery a plausible route to controlling the match without needing to match Gojo's serving strength. More frequent breaks would reduce his dependence on winning close sets.

Gojo's counterargument is substantial: he held in 87% of service games over that window, while Fery held in 79%. Those records support a narrower gap between the players than their rankings might suggest. The central tennis question is whether Fery's better return record translates into enough chances against the stronger server.

Rust and tiebreaks could narrow Fery's advantage

Fery had gone 11 days without a match, while Gojo had played one day before this meeting. That creates a concrete risk of a slow start for the favorite against an opponent arriving directly from competitive play. Rest alone settles nothing.

Tiebreaks offer another route for Gojo if his serve limits Fery's return opportunities and keeps sets from opening up before their closing stages. Fery had won 27 of 58 career tiebreaks. That losing career record makes a match decided by those passages less comfortable for him than one in which his return produces regular breaks.

There is no previous meeting to test the matchup directly. In particular, neither player's broader hard-court record establishes how Fery will read Gojo's serve in their first encounter. Early return games should therefore be informative: repeated pressure would support Fery's case, while comfortable holds for Gojo would strengthen the argument for a closer contest.

The prediction

Court Shark's model gives Fery a 66% chance of winning, compared with the market consensus of 61%. Both favor him. Their disagreement concerns the size of his advantage, rather than which player is more likely to advance, and Gojo's serving record gives a concrete reason to take the closer reading seriously.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Fery and agrees with the model. The tennis case for that choice is his stronger return record, rather than an expectation that he will outserve Gojo. The forecast's median total is 22 games, consistent with a match that need not become a prolonged deciding-set contest.

The middle half of forecast outcomes spans 19 to 29 games, with a Fery straight-sets victory the likeliest single result. That still leaves room for tight service sets within a win for the favorite. Gojo's ability to hold without repeatedly facing break chances is the specific obstacle Fery must overcome.

Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
