Jovic completes repeat in Guadalajara

Iva Jovic retained the Guadalajara Open title on Sunday, beating Peyton Stearns in straight sets in the final. The title is hers again. Jovic had entered as the second seed and handled a final opponent who arrived ranked No. 59, with an even record across her last 10 completed matches.

The American teenager had won her first WTA trophy at this event, then returned to claim it again. That is a sharp response to the pressure of defending a title. Stearns had a chance to add a breakthrough title of her own, but Jovic finished the week without dropping the final set.

Ranking rise follows title defense

The Guadalajara victory brings Jovic 451 ranking points and lifts her to world No. 13 for the first time. It is a substantial move at this point of the season. Her repeat run also confirms that last year's title was not an isolated result at the Mexican event.

Guadalajara was a WTA 500 tournament, although the draw lacked much of the usual top-end depth. Only two members of the top 20 played the event. Jovic made the most of an opening that several established players passed up, and that decision has changed her place in the rankings.

A route through familiar challengers

Jovic's run included wins over Cristina Bucsa, Zeynep Sonmez, and Magdalena Frech before the final. Bucsa came in ranked No. 65 and had won 6 of her last 10 completed matches. That made her one of the more in-form opponents on Jovic's path.

Sonmez was ranked No. 177, with an even record across her last 10 completed matches. The route still required Jovic to face different opponents before she reached Stearns. Each win mattered. By the final, she had put herself in position to defend the title against an American compatriot.

China Open presents a tougher field

Jovic now moves on to the China Open, the final Masters tournament of the WTA season. The task changes quickly. The field there will be much deeper than the one she faced in Guadalajara, where the draw offered fewer highly ranked obstacles.

Her response after the final focused on the conditions and the crowd that stayed through the rain. “Honestly, I love it here,” Jovic said. Guadalajara has now supplied both of her WTA titles, while China offers an immediate test of how her new ranking position carries into a stronger event.
