Jannik Sinner Faces Longer Injury Absence
Jannik Sinner may delay his return from a knee issue as Alexander Zverev chases the top ranking.
Jannik Sinner may remain sidelined as he recovers from a knee issue, leaving Alexander Zverev with a clear opening in the rankings race. Ethan Quinn believes Sinner will wait until Paris before returning.
Sinner remains off court
Jannik Sinner has not played since winning Wimbledon in mid-July, and his Beijing ATP 500 withdrawal confirmed his knee was not ready for competition. The absence continues. He is ranked No. 1 and has won 9 of his last 10 completed matches.
The question is timing. Sinner has a packed autumn schedule on paper, but returning before he is physically prepared would bring obvious risks after a lengthy break from match play. Health comes first. Quinn's view is that the Italian has little reason to force an appearance during the Asian Swing.
Quinn expects a Paris return
Ethan Quinn expects Sinner to wait for the Paris event before returning, then play the season-ending Finals. His own foot injury has kept him out. The American is ranked No. 47, with 6 wins in his last 10 completed matches.
Quinn said, “I think he’s done until maybe Paris Indoors.” He argued that top players can skip demanding trips when their condition is uncertain, especially after a major title run and a deep season. His point was simple. Carlos Alcaraz cut back his schedule after his US Open win in 2025, offering a recent example of a leading player choosing rest over a full slate.
Zverev has a rankings opening
Alexander Zverev could benefit if Sinner misses more events, with Shanghai and Beijing providing a chance to narrow the gap. He has won 9 of his last 10 completed matches. That form matters.
Sinner holds 11,000 ranking points, while Zverev has 9,630. In the race, Zverev leads by 700. A strong run in China while Sinner remains absent would put the top ranking within reach, although Sinner's lead in the standard rankings still gives him protection. The calendar is unforgiving. Shanghai is scheduled from October 7 to October 18, before the indoor portion of the season.
A cautious path has support
Former player Steve Johnson also expects Sinner to avoid returning before he feels ready, even if that means delaying his comeback until next season. That would deepen Zverev's opportunity. The German has never held the top ranking.
John Isner framed Zverev as the player gaining from Sinner's absence because he intends to continue competing through Shanghai. The contrast is clear. Sinner's decision hinges on his knee, while Zverev can build his position through results during the remaining events. Paris follows the Asian dates, then the Finals arrive in mid-November. Sinner's eventual return will determine how much room Zverev has created.
