Kostyuk vs Alexandrova Prediction: Ningbo 2026 Round of 16

Kostyuk's stronger hard-court holding and breaking records make her the narrow pick against Alexandrova, but their recent results leave room for an upset.

Share

Ekaterina Alexandrova meets Marta Kostyuk in Ningbo's round of 16. Kostyuk's hard-court serve and return edge makes her a narrow favorite, with Court Shark's model giving her a 55% chance.

Kostyuk leads on both sides of serve

The winner advances to the Ningbo quarterfinals when Ekaterina Alexandrova meets Marta Kostyuk in the round of 16. Kostyuk's stronger hard-court holding and breaking records support a narrow advantage, rather than an outcome that those figures alone can decide.

The immediate question is whether Alexandrova can follow her opening win here with another, while Kostyuk tries to end a two-match losing run. Their service records favor Kostyuk: she held 74% of her service games on hard courts, compared with Alexandrova's 70%. Both exceeded the tour average. That matters for Alexandrova's chances of keeping sets close.

The return gap was wider. Kostyuk broke in 37% of return games, while Alexandrova broke in 32%, over the past fifty-two weeks on this surface. My reading is that Kostyuk has the stronger route to a repeatable advantage because she leads in both measures, rather than relying on return alone.

Their latest meeting supports Kostyuk, but history is mixed

The direct record complicates that advantage. Alexandrova led their overall head-to-head 2-1, while their hard-court meetings were level at 1-1. Those results prevent a clean claim that Kostyuk's stronger surface numbers have consistently translated into success against this particular opponent, despite her statistical lead.

Their latest meeting pointed the other way. Kostyuk won 6-3 6-2 at the US Open, a recent result on the same surface that supports the case for her here. It establishes that she can beat Alexandrova comfortably, but the score does not explain which parts of her game produced that result.

Alexandrova's hard-court win came in Portoroz in 2022 and required a deciding set. The small, widely spaced series offers less guidance than the current surface records, in my view. It still leaves an important distinction: Kostyuk has the latest win, but she has not established a repeated pattern of beating Alexandrova on hard courts.

Alexandrova's recent play could narrow the gap

Recent results offer Alexandrova a counterargument. Both players went 6-4 across their last 10 matches on hard courts, so Kostyuk's better service and return figures did not produce a better recent match record. If Alexandrova keeps holding at her established level, the difference in return success may not be enough to separate them quickly.

Their preparation was different. Alexandrova played four matches in the last 14 days, while Kostyuk played once over that period. More recent competition could help Alexandrova begin sharply, although the workload alone cannot establish either readiness or fatigue.

Kostyuk last played seven days ago, and her two most recent matches ended in defeat. Alexandrova, by contrast, beat Hanyu Guo in her Ningbo opener. An early serving dip from Kostyuk would give Alexandrova a concrete route to reversing the forecast: protect her own service games and make the favorite recover from behind.

The prediction

Court Shark's model favors Kostyuk with a 55% win probability, while the market consensus puts her at 58%. The difference is modest. Both favor the same player, but neither estimate supports treating the serve and return advantage as decisive before the match begins.

Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Kostyuk, agreeing with the model; her stronger hard-court holding and breaking records support that choice. Court Shark's scoreline forecast gives a Kostyuk straight-sets win a 36% chance, the likeliest single result. The forecast median is 21 total games, not a prediction of an exact length.

The middle half of forecast outcomes runs from 18 to 27 games, leaving room for a competitive match despite Kostyuk's statistical edge. The pick is Kostyuk, narrowly. Alexandrova's ability to protect service games early is the specific test: without that, her weaker return record leaves fewer opportunities to recover a lost set.

Methodology and sources

How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.

Model estimates and observed results

The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.

Sources and citations

Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.

Limitations

Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
