Li vs Krueger Prediction: Osaka 2026 Semifinal
Li leads the key comparisons, but Krueger's comparable service record supports Court Shark's narrower view of the Osaka semifinal.
Ann Li faces Ashlyn Krueger in an Osaka semifinal with Court Shark's model giving Li a 53% win probability. Li's recent results support favoritism, but the small gap in hard-court performance supports a closer match than the market suggests.
A narrow favorite with a final within reach
Court Shark's model gives Ann Li a 53% chance against Ashlyn Krueger, while the market has Li at 59%. The disagreement is about degree. Both favor Li, but her opponent's recent form and comparable service record offer reasons to expect a competitive semifinal rather than a comfortable passage.
Both Americans enter the Osaka semifinal having won their last three matches on the tournament's hard courts, with a place in the final available. Li entered at No. 25, her career high, while Krueger stood at No. 55. Each had previously played only one main-draw season here, finishing with a win and a loss, so neither brought a substantial tournament record to distinguish her chances. Their current runs have already taken both further than those earlier appearances.

Li leads the comparisons, but not by much
Li's recent record supports the direction of the market's assessment, without establishing that its stronger preference is the right size for this matchup. She went 8-2 in her latest matches, compared with Krueger's 7-3. Their recent hard-court records were identical to those overall marks. The advantage is real but modest.
Over the past year on hard courts, Li held 73% of her service games against Krueger's 70%. That favors Li, though the closeness of those records also supports a narrow preference. Neither player's service record suggests an obvious mismatch.
The return figures tell a similar story: Li broke in 31% of return games, while Krueger broke in 29%. Li also won their only previous meeting, in Beijing earlier this month, in straight sets. That result is the most direct evidence in her favor, but a single meeting cannot establish a dependable pattern. These findings support Li as the pick more clearly than they settle the size of her advantage.
Krueger's serve and deciding-set record leave room
Krueger can overturn the forecast if her service performance stays close to Li's and the match reaches a deciding set, where her career record offers encouragement. She won 35 of 59 career deciders. That is a reason not to assume a longer match automatically favors the higher-ranked player. Li also had a winning career record in deciders, so this is an opening for Krueger rather than a decisive advantage.
The immediate tournament results give that possibility some substance. Krueger beat Talia Gibson 6-1 6-3, while Li needed three sets against Lilli Tagger in her latest match. Li had also needed a deciding set against Emerson Jones earlier in Osaka. Those results do not measure fatigue, but another uneven start from Li could give Krueger a route that the Beijing result did not. Early service holds matter here.
The prediction
Court Shark's model favors Li narrowly. The market's consensus remains unchanged from the opening price, and the evidence supports its choice of favorite more clearly than its greater confidence. Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Li, agreeing with the model. Her recent form and small advantages on serve and return support that selection.
The scoreline forecast from Court Shark makes Li in straight sets the likeliest individual result at 35%, with a deciding set carrying a 36% chance. Its median total is 21 games.
The middle half of forecast outcomes runs from 18 to 27 games, leaving room for either a relatively short result or an extended contest. Krueger's ability to protect her service games is the clearest test of whether Li's statistical edge becomes separation on court.

Methodology and sources
How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.
Model estimates and observed results
The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.
Sources and citations
Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.
Limitations
Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
