Li vs Sonmez Prediction: Osaka 2026 Round of 16
Li's form and service record support favoritism in Osaka, but Sonmez's return strength and previous wins favor a closer assessment than the market's.
Ann Li is the favorite against Zeynep Sonmez in Osaka's round of 16, but Court Shark's model gives her a measured 57% chance. Li's recent form supports the pick; Sonmez's return record and previous wins support a closer match.
The disagreement is about Li's margin
Court Shark's model makes Ann Li a narrow favorite. The market gives her a clearer advantage over Zeynep Sonmez. They agree on the likely winner, but disagree on how much separation there is between these players heading into their next meeting on hard courts.
Thursday's match in Osaka's round of 16 offers Li a chance to turn her better recent results into a quarterfinal place against an opponent she has yet to beat. For Sonmez, it is a chance to extend a favorable matchup despite arriving with the weaker recent record. That distinction matters here.
Li went 7-3 in her last ten matches, while Sonmez went 5-5. Their recent hard-court records matched those overall marks. Li also recorded wins over Aryna Sabalenka and Belinda Bencic during that stretch. Those results support the stronger assessment of Li, though prices alone cannot establish why the market favors her more decisively.

Li's serve advantage meets Sonmez's return
Li held 73% of her service games on hard courts over the past year, compared with Sonmez's 63%. That supports Li's favorite status because she had the more dependable record of protecting serve, rather than merely the better recent run of match results. The advantage is specific.
The return figures point the other way: Sonmez broke in 40% of her return games, while Li broke in 31%. Sonmez's ability to win return games offers a concrete reason to prefer the model's narrower assessment, even with Li holding the stronger service record. Neither measure settles how those strengths interact against this particular opponent.
The central contest is therefore Li's ability to preserve that service advantage against a more productive returner. If she does, her recent results become a stronger guide to the match. If Sonmez consistently interrupts her service games, the distinction between the players becomes much less comfortable for the favorite.
Sonmez has already overturned the form argument
Li's head-to-head record stood at 0-2, including a defeat on hard courts in Merida. Sonmez also won their latest meeting at Wimbledon, and both matches required deciding sets. The sample is small. Still, those results are directly relevant because Sonmez had already beaten Li on this surface, rather than relying entirely on success elsewhere.
Workload offers another possible complication: Li played six matches in the last 14 days, while Sonmez played four. Both had played recently, so this is a difference in accumulated activity rather than a return from a long absence. It does not establish fatigue, but it identifies a possible vulnerability if the match becomes extended.
A repeat Sonmez win would have a recognizable route: challenge Li's serve and carry the match into another deciding set. Conversely, Li can make the previous meetings less relevant by translating her superior service record into a match with fewer openings on return.

The prediction
Court Shark's model gives Li a 57% chance of winning, compared with the market's 65%, an eight percentage point difference. Li is the pick. Her recent results and service record support favoritism, while Sonmez's return strength and previous wins make the model's more restrained assessment persuasive.
Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Li and agrees with the model's choice. The tennis case for that selection rests on her stronger recent form and more reliable service games, rather than a favorable history against Sonmez. Court Shark's scoreline forecast gives Li a 38% chance of winning in straight sets, with a median total of 21 games.
The middle half of projected outcomes spans 18 to 27 games, leaving room for either a relatively short match or another extended meeting. Sonmez won both previous encounters in deciding sets; Li's clearest improvement would be to avoid needing one.

Methodology and sources
How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.
Model estimates and observed results
The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.
Sources and citations
Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.
Limitations
Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
