Musetti vs Fritz: the clues before the Lyon final
Musetti's recent form and matchup history offered a case against the forecast before he beat Fritz in the Lyon final.
Lorenzo Musetti beat Taylor Fritz in straight sets at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes. His stronger recent form and winning head-to-head record offered reasons to take the underdog seriously, even with the hard-court series level.
Musetti turned the forecast around early
6-3 6-4 was the final score as Lorenzo Musetti beat Taylor Fritz in Sunday's Lyon final. The model's favorite lost in straight sets. Musetti took the opening set and then secured the title without needing a decider, turning a forecast against him into a clear result.
The shift came early. Musetti's live win chance reached 54% when he moved two games ahead in the opening set, putting him above even chances before that set was settled. It later reached 86% when he went ahead early in the second set. Those readings trace how his position improved during the match; they don't explain which strokes or tactics produced the lead.

The matchup record gave Musetti a case
Musetti entered with a 4-2 lead in their head-to-head record, the clearest direct evidence that he could beat this particular opponent despite being the underdog. That history mattered. But their hard-court series stood at 1-1, so his overall advantage did not establish the same edge on the final's surface.
Their latest meeting supplied a more specific reason for confidence: Musetti had beaten Fritz in straight sets at the Australian Open earlier that year. That gave him a recent example of success against Fritz, rather than relying only on the broader matchup record.
Recent form also leaned toward Musetti. He had won 7 of his last ten matches, compared with 6 for Fritz, and their recent hard-court records matched those overall totals. Musetti arrived on a four-match winning run while Fritz had won three straight. My reading is that these were supporting signs for Musetti, rather than evidence of a large separation between the finalists.

The favorite lost, but the probability needs context
Court Shark gave Musetti a 36% pre-match win probability. The market consensus had him at 34% when the match started. Both favored Fritz, with the model giving Musetti a slightly better chance than the market did, despite the signs in his recent form and matchup history.
The pick missed. Musetti's victory was still an outcome to which the forecast assigned a meaningful chance, not one it ruled out before play began. This result shows that the less likely player won; it cannot establish whether the model's probabilities are well calibrated across many matches. The useful distinction is between choosing the wrong winner here and demonstrating that the underlying estimate was wrong.

Methodology and sources
How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.
Model estimates and observed results
The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.
Sources and citations
Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.
Limitations
Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
