Parry vs Bucsa Prediction: Tokyo 2026 Round of 32
Parry's stronger service record is the clearest difference in Tokyo, but Bucsa's return helps explain an even model forecast.
Diane Parry faces Cristina Bucsa in Tokyo's round of 32. Holding serve is their clearest separator, favoring Parry, but Court Shark's model gives each player a 50% chance.
A chance to end matching losing runs
A place in Tokyo's last sixteen awaits the winner when Diane Parry meets Cristina Bucsa in the round of 32 on Tuesday. Parry's stronger record of holding serve is the clearest distinction, although it does not produce a clear favorite in Court Shark's forecast. Both need a win. Each arrived on a six-match losing run, so the winner also ends a prolonged stretch without a victory.
Their rankings suggest a close contest at this WTA event: Parry stood at No. 34 and Bucsa at No. 38. Neither had established a convincing recent advantage that would make those nearby positions misleading. Parry had won four of her last 10 matches, while Bucsa had won three over the same span. The immediate opportunity is similar for both players: reach the next round against an opponent whose recent results have also been poor.
Parry's service record creates the clearest separation
Holding serve separates them most. In the broader service comparison, Parry held 70.0% of her service games, while Bucsa held 62.5%. That comparison covered eligible players from the WTA top hundred over the past year, rather than only matches on Tokyo's surface. Parry sat near the field median; Bucsa was much closer to the bottom of the eligible group. It is a clearer distinction than their recent win totals.
The hard-court record points in the same direction, though with a smaller gap: Parry held 69% of her service games and Bucsa held 65%. Those figures came from the past 52 weeks, making them a more relevant surface comparison without being a direct forecast of this match. My reading is that Parry has the stronger foundation for protecting her own games. That advantage gives her a route to winning without needing to consistently outperform Bucsa on return, where the comparison reverses.

Each dot is one of the WTA top 100 with enough matches in the last 52 weeks. Diane Parry is 29th of 64; Cristina Bucsa is 60th of 64.
| Player | Service games held | Place |
|---|---|---|
| Diane Parry | 70.0% | 29th of 64 |
| Cristina Bucsa | 62.5% | 60th of 64 |
| Field median | 69.8% | |
| Field best (Elena Rybakina) | 82.7% | 1st |
Bucsa's return can offset the service gap
Bucsa has a direct counter. On hard courts over the same period, she broke serve in 37% of return games, compared with Parry's 32%. If that return advantage carries into Tokyo, Parry's better holding record may not translate into more comfortable service games against this particular opponent. The important distinction is between being the stronger server in the comparison and controlling the overall exchange of breaks.
There was no previous meeting to test how those opposing strengths interact, so neither player had a demonstrated matchup advantage against the other. A deciding set would not provide much historical separation either: Bucsa won 41 of 81 career deciders. Parry won 27 of 55. Those career records offer little basis for assuming either player becomes substantially more reliable if the match reaches its final set. Bucsa's clearest route to overturning the analyst's pick is therefore her return, rather than a proven edge in their shared history.
The prediction
Court Shark's model lists Parry as its pick but gives both players a 50% chance, leaving no displayed probability advantage. The market consensus gives Bucsa 51%, a slight preference that has not changed since the opening reading. This is effectively even. Neither forecast supports treating Parry's service advantage as decisive on its own.
The independent pick also favors Parry: Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, agrees with the model's listed selection. The tennis case for that choice is her stronger service record, although Bucsa's return numbers explain why the overall forecast remains so close. It is a narrow pick rather than a claim that their recent form points firmly in one direction.
The match-length forecast from Court Shark has a median of 21 total games. The middle half of outcomes runs from 18 to 27 games, leaving room for a short result as well as a longer contest. Bucsa's opportunity lies in turning her stronger return record into repeated pressure on Parry's service games.

Methodology and sources
How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.
Model estimates and observed results
The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.
Sources and citations
Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.
Limitations
Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
