Tien vs Van Assche Prediction: Erste Bank Open 2026 Round of 32
Tien is the favorite, but Van Assche's stronger hard-court return record supports Court Shark's more cautious assessment than the market.
Learner Tien faces Luca Van Assche in the Erste Bank Open round of 32. Court Shark's model gives Tien a 70% chance, but Van Assche's return record supports a closer contest than the market suggests.
Tien's ranking advantage meets a less decisive form line
The market makes Learner Tien a stronger favorite than Court Shark's model does. The model leaves Luca Van Assche more room to upset him.
Their Erste Bank Open meeting on Sunday, October 25 offers a place beyond the round of 32 on hard courts. Tien enters as the higher-ranked player, while Van Assche has a chance to extend his tournament record beyond an opening defeat in his only previous appearance. Tien previously won three matches here before losing. Neither player has won the title.
The ranking gap is clear. Tien stood at No. 17, compared with Van Assche at No. 48, a substantial difference that supports making the American the favorite without resolving how strong that favoritism should be. The more immediate evidence is less separated: neither arrives on a winning run, and their recent results do not show a clear advantage for either player.
Serve favors Tien, return favors Van Assche
Tien's service record supports the stronger reading of his chances. Over the past year on hard courts, he held 82% of his service games, compared with Van Assche's 80%. That advantage gives Tien a plausible route to protecting his serve more consistently, although it is not a large separation on its own.
Van Assche's return record points the other way. He broke in 28% of return games, against Tien's 24%, giving the underdog a concrete strength rather than merely a hope that the favorite struggles. Each player's sample covered 45 matches. The contrast suggests that Van Assche's best opportunity may come on return, while Tien has the stronger record of protecting his own service games.
Recent form offers no separator. Both players went 5-5 over their last 10 matches, and their recent hard-court records were identical as well. Taken together, these findings support Tien as the favorite but also explain why a more cautious estimate is defensible.
The opening service games could test Tien's readiness
Tien had gone 12 days without a match, creating some risk that he needs time to regain competitive sharpness. Van Assche had played three matches in the recent fortnight and competed more recently. That difference could matter if Van Assche brings his stronger return record into the opening games before Tien settles on serve.
There is no direct precedent. They had never met, so neither player has an established matchup advantage that can settle the disagreement between the forecasts. Van Assche's recent activity offers a possible route to an early advantage if Tien takes time to find his service rhythm after the break.
A deciding set would test another difference: Tien won 49 of his career 70 deciding sets, a stronger career record than Van Assche's. That history makes an extended match a less obvious route to an upset than early pressure on Tien's serve.
The prediction
Court Shark's model favors Tien with a 70% win probability, while the market consensus gives him 77%. Van Assche's market probability is unchanged from the opening consensus. The disagreement concerns the size of Tien's advantage, not the identity of the favorite, with Van Assche's return record providing the clearest support for the model's more cautious view.
Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Tien, agreeing with the model's choice. His stronger service record and career success in deciding sets support that selection, despite the return advantage on the other side. The scoreline forecast has a median of 21 total games. A short match is plausible.
The middle half of forecast outcomes spans 18 to 28 games, leaving room for both a controlled win and a longer contest. The specific test is whether Van Assche can turn his better hard-court break record into early service pressure before Tien establishes the service advantage that supports his favorite status.

Methodology and sources
How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.
Model estimates and observed results
The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.
Sources and citations
Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.
Limitations
Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
